Winter 2014/15 the sunniest on record for the UK (i.e. since 1929)

We often hear the claim that blue skies and sunshine are a thing of the past because of "chemtrails" (the claim is sometimes made even by those who accept that the trails in the sky are simply contrails).

Is this true? It appears not, at least in the UK, which sees plenty of air traffic and plenty of contrails. The winter just gone, i.e. Dec 1 2014 to Feb 28 2015, was the sunniest since records began in 1929. Final data aren't in yet, but the previous record of 189 hours had been equalled by February 25, with three days still to go.

27 February 2015 - This winter is very likely to be a record breaker. Provisional Met Office statistics show that the UK has had its sunniest winter in records dating back to 1929.

While the figures for temperature and rainfall are fairly average, it has been one of, if not the sunniest winter in UK records dating back to 1929.

By 25 February the UK had already seen 189 hours of sunshine, equalling the 2001 record, but with 3 more days left to the end of the meteorological winter we are likely to beat that record by about 7 hours.

Note also that the previous record was set in 2001, well after most chemtrail believers say that the "spraying" began. The sunniest entire year on record in the UK is also in the relatively recent past: 2003.

These sunshine figures are now available on graphs going back to the beginning of the records since 1929:

The period from the 1960s to the 1980s was relatively dull, but since the mid 1990s it has generally been sunnier than average. Pretty much the reverse of what the "skies were always blue when I was a child" crowd would have you believe.

so the chemtrails are making it WARMER in the UK? cool

:D:D;):D
several smileys to make it OBVIOUS this was a joke.

Great data set.

Now watch the chemtrail believers discount it by saying "Duh, thats 'cause they only spray at night now you sheep!"

And yet they will still talk of constant spraying going on all day and watchingthe same plane go back and forth etc etc and the whole carpet of trails etc.

It would be interesting to know just how thick the cloud has to be before it ceases to be "sunny" for the purposes of detection. Looking out of my office window now it is sunny, but a good proportion of the sky is actually covered with contrails of various ages. So the sun varies between full sun and rather hazy sunshine as the cloud crosses the sun.

Old-fashioned sunshine recorders use a glass ball to focus the sunlight onto a strip of card. As the sun moves across the sky, it burns a line onto the card, recording the hours of sunlight.

I think modern automated weather stations use some kind of photoelectric device instead.

Presumably in high summer, when the sun is stronger, you could have thicker cirrus cloud and still preserve enough light to trigger the recorder than you could in winter, when the sun is weaker. The sunshine that we get may indeed be slightly hazier. But what is for sure is that contrails are not leading to a greater prevalence of overcast (ie sun-free) skies.

Well, being serious for a moment, that graph is purely for sunshine, not temperature, but the temperature graph is rather similar:

The Sixties really were cool (man)...
