Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

Hello! I found our about this site from the segment on Joe Rogan. Thanks for hosting this and thanks for the contributors! Lots of good info here.

I guess I'm a bit old hat on the conspiracy stuff, at least chemtrails and 9/11. I was a "debunker" in the late '90s when Clifford Carnicom was leading the charge on his Ezboard chemtrail forum. I got banned pretty quickly, and founded my own message board that ended up being a wayward site for the banned government agents (whomever didn't drink the chemtrail kool-aid on the chemmie boards). @Jay Reynolds would actually know me from back in those days, as he was a frequent contributor to my board back then. I stuck with it for a while, but life tore me away from the internet for several years. To be honest, I thought that the whole chemtrail thing would die out as the original chemmies realized that they weren't dying off in droves and/or the weather isn't being modified as they think it's supposed to be. Boy was I wrong!

Anyways, a bit about my background. Former USAF F-16 pilot, drawn into conspiracies when someone called my Squadron to ask why we were spraying them. Down the rabbit hole soon after that. I'm out of the military now and flying for the airlines, so I guess I'm a full-fledged sprayplane pilot. I'd not be back into this world, but (as a previous poster is dealing with) my wife of all people has gone all in on a bunch of conspiracies and won't even listen to me any more when I try and debunk her assertions. Pretty scary to see it first hand with a loved one and not know what to do. So, I'm back in the fray I guess. I'm not going to be here every day, or even every week. But I'll lurk and post occasionally and hopefully my "problem" will get better.

I'm from west texas and out here the Marfa lights are the most mysterious/ paranormal. I would really like to see it explained. Thanks for having me tho!
Welcome to Metabunk. We usually don't respond to such inquiries in the welcome thread but since it's a quick answer I'll post it
The Marfa lights, also known as the Marfa ghost lights, have been observed near U.S. Route 67 on Mitchell Flat east of Marfa, Texas, in the United States. They have gained some fame as onlookers have ascribed them to paranormal phenomena such as ghosts, UFOs, or will-o'-the-wisp, etc. However, scientific research suggests that most, if not all, are atmospheric reflections of automobile headlights and campfires. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfa_lights

As a geologist, the emergence of the flat earth idea (it is not a theory in the scientific sence so I dislike referring to it as such) saddens me. When I watched Mick on Joe Rogan's podcast recently and then saw a response from Eric Dubay that was just a rehash of the same old bunk claims he as others like him always make, it got me thinking about what is the best way to get rid of the anti-scientific mindset that he and others like him share. I couldn't really think of anything that would be that successful, thus I ended up here.

Hi everyone! Just found out about this site watching a joe rogan YouTube vid on flat earth - first time I've really watched him ... refreshing to hear some one say what a load of crap! ... for my part the jury is always out unless I can physically quantify (and even then the jury is still out lol) anyway , looking forwards to exploring the site

Since I was about ten years old I had visions of things using magnets and and devices using spinning objects to stabilize motion. I have for some reason not wanted to learn anything about these things that I didnt learn first hand, and my reason for this is I felt I would be Infected, or poisoned in my mind if I used the experience of others, which may hinder my ultimate goal of using magnetivity, to create a perpetuous machine that will change the way we travel, think, live, as well as, die.
I am 54 years old, and have had one major goal in my life, MUSIC, I am a practicing Singer Songwriter with a background in Classical music, and I play any instrument I can get my hands on, mostly stringed or percussive. Music in my own opinion is the foundation that I believe has put me in the mind state that I am in, as far as Curricula is concerned. I try to explain it as if I were a machine and my brain is the computer. A system of input(experience), storage, and retrieval. In learning music and learning songs by others and remembering, each part, lyrics, and so on as well as remembering the ones I write, in different ways, such as, written sheet music, listening, from watching, I have trained my mind to learn, and store and retrieve, and every time I learn something it teaches me how to learn, better, faster and so on. So after 50 years or maybe more of doing this I have people around me wondering how I know how to do all the things I do, so Knowledgeably, and efficiently. you can hear some of my stuff at http://ourstage.com/profile/charlesmorey. Along with all of this I have been able to record, and master all of my own stuff, which is the reason it don't sound alll that great.. Anyway, These visions that I have had in the past and even some of them in the present, have still got me thinking I can or will be sable to do what I said in the first paragraph..

Well that is who I am!!~

Hi all. My name is jbeebe02. Never heard of this site before today, happened to come across it in an article I read about dbunking chem trails. I've gone down the rabbit hole on YouTube watching a lot of different conspiricy theories on a broad spectrum of events. I haven't read through many of the posts yet but I'm glad to have another source of information. I have many questions but I will read through what I can because my answers may be in there. Anyway thanks for having me!

Hi! My name is Walt and I've been very interested in debunking and skepticism and all that for a long time. I'm currently unemployed and when I'm not sending out resumes, I'm stirring up trouble on facebook. Came here from a facebook post that referenced this site covering a photo meme showing a policeman spraying pepper spray on a child. I hope I can contribute and also, hope you all can help me with things I see that haven't already been debunked.

This thread is for any first time poster to (optionally) post an introductory "hi everyone" post, which will also get you "verified" (meaning you can post without anti-spam restrictions) once it has been approved.

A few words on who you are and how you ended up here would be appreciated. Or just say hi!

Hi folks, no particular interest in 'debunking' other than in passing-do like reading people arguing though so fingers crossed. How did I find the page? I dare say the 'deep' internet filter buried below the Vatican was involved to a greater or lesser degree...;-)

Went Camping at Bagby Recreational park in California, we took motor boat 9 hp outboard 12 ft upstream along Merced river, around 2 am that night, I was hit with three times with beam of white light from sky. White light beam fell upon me, my cousin Brad witness the event. I know without doubt some power can send white light from sky. Mystery indeed.

Hi guys im Deb
Im excited to stumble across Metabunk. My focus is debunking false material & replacing with facts.Realizing the world is changing so rapidly we must not leave behind common sence, science, physics, theology, history. The Truth is a slow process while untruths spread like fire.GREAT FORUM !

Hi Folks,

I'm glad to have found this forum, I read a posting from a pilot who flew down to Antarctica, in the Flat Earth topics here, and realized this forum is probably where I should be.

Let me introduce myself. I'm an antenna/RADAR engineer with about 20 year in the field working for various defense contractors. I've stumbled on the Flat Earth topic on YouTube last year, and was quite intrigued and set out to measure the curvature of the earth. My nature is to not ridicule but to try and understand what somebody is saying and why, perhaps I can learn something new, discover a new phenomena, or simply reinforce what I already know and come up with a more elegant proof of its validity. Obviously a lot of nonsense is peddled under the Flat Earth topic, e.g., the sun and moon is in the clouds, and there are no satellites, etc., however, I've learned over the years to keep an open mind and wade through a lot of dirt to find a nugget of truth, and I believe I found a few intriguing "hints" the world may not be what it appears to be.

Anyway, I hope to share some of the research I've done, and the conclusions I've reached, and have respectful conversations. I don't really have the energy or time to educate or set anybody straight, there's only 24 hr in a day. If somebody wants to believe the entire world is flat, (not just portions of it) so be it. I chuck it up to intellectual diversity, and frankly I enjoy diversity.

Welcome to the crazy house.. straight jackets are down the hall on the left, and the padded rooms on the right.

Hi Mick and everyone.

I got to know you Mick with your incredible website "Contrail Science", then I noticed that you were also a ufo investigator on Facebook where we both worked on the same case (Chilean Navy) and we came to the same conclusion (flight #) independently.

I've been working on other IR cases and at least one of them is mentioned in this forum. I am talking about the Bristol Channel (NPAS St-Athan) case. I started investigating it since I heard about it on Twitter when this story came out and I will share my findings here sooner or later. So far, I failed to identify what was filmed and it seems that you guys have the same problem but I won't give up anytime soon.

For those who are willing to take a look at some of my previous work, here is a document that you may find interesting:

Hello

Found site via a link from a ufo-specific debunk blog to the excellent debunk of the Chilean navy footage, which I had seen no real analysis of previously.

Besides a fairly brief, fairly casual period of belief in the 9/11 false flag theory when I was in my mid-late teens (Loose Change...), I have no significant history either of believing or debunking explicit conspiracy theories.

Having said that I *would* characterize myself as having some kind of 'conspiratorial thought process'. I am for instance very quick to assume that public officials are lying or deluded if I disagree extremely with their policy, statement or their justification of it and I sometimes entertain 'alternative' explanations for their motivations longer than I ought. (I cannot currently come up with a good way to define what I mean so I just gave an example.)

My potentially useful experience lies almost exclusively in my extensive observation (from a non-believers point of view) of belief adoption and maintenence in faith-based 'addiction recovery' in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

I am extremely interested in how people birth, adopt, sustain and justify irrational beliefs (not least my own :)) and also how public figures justify what appear to be irrational policies in public spheres.

I have read the posting guidelines and appreciate that this is not the website's primary purpose but there seems to be ample room in the 'Practical Debunking' subforum's description for the discussion of many of the things I am interested in.

I will take it easy and imagine I will get a clear feeling for what is and is not welcome before I could get around to posting what might not be welcome.

Lastly would just like to re-complement the Chilean navy footage debunk, it was extremely beautiful.

Seems to be an excellent website, look forward to reading and posting.

AFAIK, most of the more dedicated debunkers around here were attracted to UFOs or conspiracies at some - often teen-centered - point in their life. I sure know that I have devoured all UFO books in our public library when I was around 15.

I think it is obvious that age is a factor regarding critical thinking, for most people at least. It also helps to be aware that conspiracy theories do have a certain attraction, as does watching accidents ...

Anyway - welcome !

Hello Metabunk!! My name is Gerald II, I hail from Tulsa, OK but currently reside in a little town North of Tulsa called Collinsville. I heard Mick on Joe Rogans podcast today & thought I'd check the site out. Still looking around but just wanted to say hello & glad to be part of this site!

Really glad you're here...you will be informed, and perhaps enthralled.....

I think a big difference today is that when I was devouring UFO and Ghost books they were published books with an editor front he local library which made them feel more "real" and there was not really anything out there to provide a simple debunking explanation.
Despite the huge prevalence of bunk these days on the net that means more people will be exposed to many of these kind of things than before, if you are WILLING to look for it, you can find a debunk of anything and then have a more balanced view but you have to find it and you have to realize you NEED to find it.

Just a friendly reminder that this thread is for welcome messages only. It's already >1,400 posts. Please try to avoid conversations within this thread, thanks.

Hi! New member here, I simply love this site. I came here in a last ditch effort to find material to adequately explain to an otherwise intelligent person that no, a 'chemtrail" conspiracy is just not really possible even if some people wanted to do it... Here I have found a lot of very creative people who value the truth and facts based reasoning which is under vicious assault these days. In some ways it is right for people to not want to trust the media so I don't... what I see in here requires no trust because it's not about belief it's about the facts and at least making the attempt to encompass things like cognitive bias when evaluating statements instead of the usual teenage level emotional response. I appreciate the time and energy many of you have invested in simply trying to get people to open their eyes in general and not be led by the nosering to whatever is convenient for some profiteer to have them consume at the moment. This is heroic in my estimation. Anyway, Hi!

I've been ''lurking'' on this site for a few months and have used you're posts and resources frequently. (Especially the curve calculator)

I decided to join just today and i will primarily be active on the flat earth debunk board.

Hello. Stumbled on this site few times before and came here today looking for information about the Plasco Building collapse after being utterly disappointed with the relevant thread on a certain skeptic board I used to post to years ago. Really enjoy the "to the point, no bullshit" type posts I've seen here.

Most of my "debunking" experience is with local conspiracy theories. I also have some experience doing rudimentary audio, photo and video enhancements and analysis on general subjects and debating 9/11 and JFK issues. My shitty English is due to it being my third or fourth language.

Hi, I live in Bromley, South London. A number of my Facebook friends (and their friends), believe in Chemtrails. I discovered this place as a good source of information to debunk their claims.

Hi all, I'm Alan. Great site, only just stumbled across it.

As a great man once said:

Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too? (Douglas Adams)

I don't remember how exactly I found this site. I think it was linked to in some Reddit thread I was reading a while ago. Anyway, I've been lurking for some time now, and finally decided to join up today.

Hi all,

Found this site after seeing Mick (the 2nd time on Joe Rogan's podcast). I was amazed at the length Mick went to in debunking one of the first contrail threads I happened to click on when I first got here (can't remember which one). So I decided to read all posts on the main page, starting on page 31!! I'm now up to page 6 and will be caught up soon :D.

As you can see from my nic, I love reading the flat earth stuff. I can't believe, people 'genuinely' believe that stuff.

Hope I can contribute more in the future, but judging by the length of detail you guys go into (because of all your combined knowledge), I may just be a lurker.

Hello. My name is Jared, and I stumbled in here because I liked the idea of "polite debunking." I've been self studying science since I was old enough to talk. I look forward to my time here!

Hi. I am Bas Koning, and my hobby is debunking flat earth theory.
I often get carried away, try to not to so much, but the lies.. I cant stand them!

I am just a below average hobby scientist myself.
I like the idea of basic do it yourself science.

Busy collecting a list of most common misconceptions about flat earth.
So I watched 'Flat Earth - The Ultimate Litmus Test' by martyleeds33

Then could not resist commenting this debunk on that:
litmuspart1.png
part 2:
litmuspart2.png

You can read the months long debate that followed here:

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNVvRxQWb6g&lc=z12sfl0iipzhfx0bo04cg1hymoeqt33qtuo0k

I then realized something had to been done about this mass hysteria.
One thing I learned (but fail horribly sometimes) is staying polite.
Sometimes I could just strangle these people. Some must be trolls.
People can not be that stupid. I often ask them why they believe it. What would happen if they where proven wrong. One guy said he stopped drinking at AA, started believing the bible, word for word. He could not need the doubt. One guy said he would lose his family and friends if they found out he doubted this. Weird.

I have a whole theory about flat earthers. Basically there are three types, some overlap.
1) trolls. People who know better, but for whatever reason act as if. Some for money, some for fun, some to polish their debating skills.
2) not so bright people. The ones that simply have a lot of questions. And want answers. I focus on this group. There is some hope for this group.
3) religious people, who take the bible just a bit to literal. I have a few arrows in my arsenal for them to: 'Hebrew words leave the option open that day means era, and that four corners means 'from south east west north'. Also, what seems to scare them is 'thou shall not bear false witness'. I have more, but it too much to write down. Ok, one more, Jesus did not follow the old testament. He did not stone the adulteress. As Leviticus demands. So why should they.

So, another thing I noticed is the 'drug' effect. I call it dopamine, but I am sure the actual name is different. So, basically not so bright people, we are talking the dumbest 1 percent, they did not get anything at school. Felt dumb all their lives. Have big, big personal problems because of this. People have been calling them 'stupid' all their lives. Now, they find something, that they also don't get 'yet', but they perhaps can: if they watch more videos. Its self-brainwashing! 'do research! have to do more research!'

These videos tell them, they are ON to something. Tell them, they are smart ones, and the normal people 'dumb'. The joy they have calling other people dumb! Dissing out the 'stupid' name-calling. It gives them a rush. They want more. They want to feel smart. On top of things. Its a drug.

Some videos are school examples of brainwashing. Continues repeats. Soft voice. Hard voice. Flashing text. One thing I noticed is this:

Brain Overload. They can spew out nonsense SO fast, that the brain can not digest it fast enough. It tries to stack them in memory, but the amount of nonsense soon is larger as your memory: you still dont have time to digest a single one of them, and in comes the next one: your brain does the next best thing: stops filtering. Letting it all in. Remove the 'wait a minute, is that really so?' common sense filter. They just hammer and hammer and hammer, until your brain goes: ok! Letting all in!

Pure brainswashing techniques. I hate it.

Excuse me if my English sometimes is a bit strange, I am native Dutch.
