Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

I'm happy to be part of one of the most sensible online groups I've discovered so far.

I had no idea about the subject of chemtrails until my buddy sent me one of those YouTube videos with the scary music and pictures of skies full of contrails. I didn't buy any of it but my friend (whom I always thought was a smart guy) really wanted me to know the "truth." I burdened me to the point where I had to research it. What I found were several debunking websites and learned what it was really all about. Metabunk was one of those sites.

Yesterday (June 11,2016) another friend (who knows my dim view on the subject of chemtrails) sent me the link to "32 photos from INSIDE chemtrail planes" and had questions. I have seen a piece where they were all debunked and I could probably wing it myself but I think sending him the link would be a good way to defuse the BS in his mind. Do you know where I could find the article?

Welcome James. See:

Hello,

My name is Jacob and I am glad to have found this forum. I've used Metabunk in the past as a means of reference and it felt as though it was about time I become a member. I am so impressed with the rules, blown away by the patience of some of the members, and eager to start contributing.

A little background on myself: I am a mature student studying the History and Philosophy of Science at one of the world's top 20 Universities. I grew up in a home where homeopathy was accepted, along with Reiki and many other "alternative" medicines. It was later on that I decided to research the claims made by the pseudosciences and develop my own opinions. As such, I ended spending a great deal of time arguing ad nauseam with people who would so often resort to the tired arguments of "you're just closed minded", "you'll believe when you see [insert obscure YT or unknown film director]'s movie", or any general "sheeple" statement. I eventually realized that I was missing a key element: I couldn't understand how someone could believe that they can choose their own facts. This is what led me to the philosophy of science, and to thoroughly enjoy the research and the puzzle work of debunking.

So hello to you all!

So hello to you all!
Welcome!
It's nice to have another college student on here, being surrounded by geezers more mature members all the time can get a bit draining!

Ehh? Speak up!

Young whippersnappers. Acting like we should just give them the world. No work ethic, I tell ya. Not like the old days. Before you could step into dead men's shoes you had to clear the occupants yourself. Hmph.

Trust me, I can't wait to be settled into a career with my loans paid off and/or retired and/or divorced with a good little alimony check in the mail every once in a while and/or the sole benefactor to a rich older husband who died in a mysterious boating accident but left me the investment firm and the house in Carmel-by-the-sea (which will be staffed by a group of twenty-something men in form-fitting bellhop uniforms of course), you guys have it easy...

Hi everyone, my name is Norma. I founded the "9/11 Truth Movement - All Theories Welcomed" facebook group back in February of 2014. I've learned a lot during this time. I'm ooking forward to hearing your perspectives on certain topics.
This thread is for any first time poster to (optionally) post an introductory "hi everyone" post, which will also get you "verified" (meaning you can post without anti-spam restrictions) once it has been approved.

A few words on who you are and how you ended up here would be appreciated. Or just say hi!

Welcome.
I glanced at the FB page you mentioned :

I see you tend to put logic before emotion....a good thing.

You said:
Norma Rae Thomas Cooper .....I've never posted in metabunk and I obviously disagree with their conclusions that there is no conspiracy, but I have to admit that they do a fairly good job at researching data. I wish more "truth seekers" would do deeper research rather than just parrot what their leaders are saying.

I think you'll find that we are happily bent on discussing topics in factual detail, and we have a Politeness Policy, and also prevent any convo that continually strays from the topic.
Facts rather than opinions.

Again, welcome.

Regarding the above, I would just like to remind people that although certain members maybe do believe 'there is no conspiracy'; Metabunk is about examining specific claims of evidence.
I think most members* would say something along the lines of "to date i have seen no evidence of a false flag having been executed".
*We do have 9/11 Truther members as well.

Thank you Leifer. I have actually learned a lot from people who believe in the official story. I think when we attack a topic from all views and we leave our egos out, we get closer to the truth.

It's refreshing to meet someone who doesn't agree with us on some issues but refrains from name-calling and the like. I think we, too, will find your evidence helpful.

There are a bunch of pages in the 9/11 forum, peruse through there and I think you'll find many claims of evidence. If you have any new evidences [Metabunk doesn't] have, feel free to post and welcome to Metabunk! :)

Just saw something on FB by you and am planning to lurk. So much out there that is nonsense.

All right, I came to this site because of a brilliant take-down of the scam that is the Fontus water bottle. I can't "react" to posts yet, which is why I joined up, but it says it could take a couple of posts to get me fully verified. Seems to be a good place to combat all the nonsense that people believe in these days...

Hi! i was brought here by looking into "junk DNA" and being on the fence about some Russian researchers. I wanted too believe them very bad but coming here showed me it was in fact not what it seemed and untrue too say it politely lol I love knowledge and have a thirst for it. i feel like this site can provide that! so here i am, all signed up.

JunkDNA? I used to guitar tech for them. I apparently inspired their track Shyna after I accidentally brutally elbowed the guitarist in the face once.

Hi All, new member here... Amazing site. Think I got here through a dailymail article on the plasma sucking ufo, that led to a discussion board debate which I believe Mick West replied to and linked to this site... certainly glad I have found this site. A lot of excellent minded people on this forum who are interested in debating topics based on evidence, rather than emotions or character assassinations. Only downside is that there arent that many topics left for me to read on this site. gone through a lot of stuff already, but keep checking back daily or every other day. Thank you all who made this website possible.

hey everyone... i found this site a couple of weeks ago... don't remember how... but i found a lot of good debunking going on here... so i've decided to stay... and perhaps help out some... nice to meet you all...

Hello everyone! Like many others apparently, I came accross this forum while looking for some discussion about something I suspected bunk. I not only found that particular something debunked here but also found the focus and the guidelines and thus the general feel about this forum appealing.

My bunk related background mostly has to do with the endless discussion over Young Earth Creationism involved claims. However that is probably so only because I am an undergraduate BSc student in geoscience who previously thought he simply has something more important to say than many others.

I happened to find my way here just about after having begun to leave that eternal battlefield of worldviews behind. This forum appears to be a convenient opportunity to learn more focussed conversation instead of going on about some debunked stuff all over again just because of the entertainment of arguing.

Hi all at Metabunk,

Many of my friends are ardent supporters of various conspiracy theories, and I and my partner politely disagree with their views ;). Chemtrails were the first CT I came across. While looking for sensible, scientific explanations of these supposed chemtrails, to try and put our friends' minds at ease, I came across Mick's excellent Contrail Science site. That in turn led me here. It kind of gives me hope that I'm not the only one who doesn't see the logic in these theories. I appreciate the (mostly!) non-combative tone on here, and think you do a great job.

Thanks!

Hey guys, this isn't my first post but it's close to it, and I figured I should add myself to the list of newer members.
(Also I'd like to apologize again for my initial amateur handling of the forum rules & being specific.. sometimes I just need to not get ahead of myself.)

With that said, I am a long time reader, first (ish) time poster. I have been interested in reading about and debunking conspiracies for maybe 5 years now, but just recently started being pro-active and engaging 'believers' with rational and civil discussion (which is why this website/org is so amazing and efficient!).

My background: Starting in high school I was really interested in physics (but not as a career) so I started reading alot. So much that I felt my life had changed, from someone who skated by on letting words go in one ear and out the other, to somebody who was taking control in understanding some of the really tough physical/mathematical concepts that exist. It helped me take my critical thinking to a new level, and kind of 'freed' me from my, well, I guess lazyness.. or just not caring about important topics. As Facebook became the norm on the internet, it added to my frustration of the spreading of misinformation, as so many of my friends were (and still do) post random misinformation, just because they feel it's correct. It all fueled my ambition to find objective truth for myself, challenging everything, even my own "beliefs".

I have a pretty solid understanding of physics even though I do not have a degree in it. I currently have a degree in Audio Engineering/Sound Recording/Production, but I have toyed with the possibility of actually pursuing SOMETHING in the physics/mathematics fields in the future.

For what it's worth, I'm also an upcoming hip-hop/electronic dj/producer, and my Soundcloud is www.soundcloud.com/EyeonicDJ

I hope to contribute something of substance to the site in the near future. I have been deep in Flat Earth debunking/discussion recently, so that is probably what I'll be discussing on these forums first. Thanks everybody!

Hey all, fairly new to this wonderful world of metabunk, where I've found - shock horror - people are actually interested in finding stuff out and being civil while they're at it. What a rare treat. :)

Anyway, as for introduction, I'm just a normal bloke from England. I've long enjoyed debunking stuff, starting off with all that forwarded nonsense we used to get in the 90s, Amazon rainforest petitions, etc, and then later various mad New Age things an ex of mine used to send me.

I just really dig getting down to the heart of the matter. Urban myths and religious ideas. Psychological notions such as the Yale class of '53. The 100th monkey and the slowly boiling frog. Misattributed quotes and the people behind the glib platitudes.

All those things that are repeated ad infinitum, and generally go unchecked.

I used to believe some pretty nutty things in my youth, but once I started actually doing proper research and especially discovering the sources of certain ideas - Plato and Atlantis was a big lightbulb moment - it got me hungry to delve into the all of it.

Now whenever I get sent something outlandish I google, snopes, read all around it, and try to come to an informed opinion - which is hopefully one which coincides with my previous uninformed opinion.

Little tongue-in-cheek cognitive bias joke there. ;)

I still believe in some things others may consider nutty, but what the hey.

Cheers! :)

Hi. I've come across this site a few times, most recently today when I was impressed by the thoroughness and hard work that went into the debunking of chemtrails. My interests that are relevant to Metabunk are as follows:

1. How scientific, pseudo-scientific, and contariran narratives are constructed and maintained.
2. The relationship between orthodoxy and dissent (generally and within science).
3. Philosophical issues and political issues around science and the social construction of knowledge.

I'm aware that most of these are outside the posting guidelines for this site, so I will probably mostly be a lurker. There is some relevance though, since I have found that debunkers sometimes are guilty of the same group-think and confirmation bias that they identify in those they are debunking.

Anyway, thanks to the creators and moderators for such a useful, civil, and well-organized site.

Charles

Hi. I am Frank an engineer by trade and a skeptic by nature. That's skeptic in the classic requiring evidence sense not the evidence denying conspiracy sense . I've recently begun engaging on line with people promoting a flat earth conspiracy. I can't explain why one would bother with such a hopeless task but willful ignorance especially when promoted by those who know ( or should know) better irritates the hell out of me.

Good night guys,

Speaking here is a brazillian dude. What brought me here was my curiosity and that is my background: I had contact with the conspiracy universe since 2011, frequenting a Forum from here and diverse others sites of the type.

The reason that has lead me to investigate more about skeptcism was the Flat Earth: since the final of the late year it became a thread discussed in the forum I has usually participate, and even with the rebuttals posted by some members there was still some insistence in the discussion of the matter. So I start to follow a Facebook page that aim to refutate the Flat Earth and then look for other pages which speak about skeptcism and critical thinking, here being one of the places I came to. Other things motivated me to do so, not only in that forementioned forum but in other sites: the practic of commonly post information without averiguate it sources, posting even articles of sites that are obvious spreaders of hoaxes; and the pop from times to times of some date to the happen of a cataclysmatic event, even if a lot of them became all false later. The experience was not a waste: of certain way, it stimulates you to doubt and verify the informations that came to you.

I expect to read interesting stuff here.

Hello from Finland!

I'm a skeptic and an active blogger who triest to debunk the humbug of the week as they come and go. Somewhat popular blog Paholaisen Asianajaja and the Finnish Skeptic Society's Skeptikko -magazine keep me busy writing. I've been following Metabunk for over two years now.

Good night guys,

Speaking here is a brazillian dude ...

Hey, there, terrinha brasilis. :)

I'm also Brazilian, although i'm living in US for quite a while now.

If you want to PM me in Portuguese, please do so. :)

Welcome, hope you enjoy.

Hello friends,

I appreciate the combination of intelligence and civility that I find here, and would like to introduce myself. I suspect that most folks here would find the understanding of multidimensional reality that I present in my Great Shift and Earth Energy Healing websites far out, but here are a few links to give any who may be interested a flavor of it: http://www.preparingforthegreatshift.org/Skeptics.htm and http://archive.aweber.com/gsnewsletter/BOrHi/h/Great_Shift_Blog_13_On.htm. I'm juggling multiple projects right now, so may not have much time to actively post here, but I do anticipate checking in regularly as an antidote to the murkiness that I find elsewhere on the web.

Hi all,

Have recently seen an increase in 'Flat Earth' claims so I've been spending a little bit of time putting together information about what their claims are and why are they wrong.

Not that I expect to convince any hardcore Flat Earthers directly but it helps me understand the physics better and hopefully it helps people who might be mislead by having correct information about various phenomena and why the Flat Earth claims are wrong.

I don't plan on doing it for a long period of time but rather I just plan to cover a few dozen specific topics but my blog is Flat Earth Insanity (subtle right?)

By profession I am a software developer going back to the early 1980's but have my fingers in lots of pies, I like to understand how things work and that includes the universe in which I find myself.

My favorite saying is that science is a process of removing sources of error, bias, and illogic from our conclusions.

Already have found a great many resources here from the forums so I thought I would contribute a few thoughts of my own that I haven't seen.

Hello to all!

Brand new here! Got introduced to chemtrails through a fellow twitter-er, got sucked into the discussion and now I'm here. He was a 'believer' and I am not. I needed 'ammo' ;)
