Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

Hello all!!

I have been lurking around here for quite a while, reading posts, and wanting to sometimes join the discussions. But, I never actually signed up for an account; so, I am doing so. I first discovered this site while doing research to try to find the end all be all shut down for 9/11 truthers. This site has really covered just about everything and is a great source of info. I am a High School teacher and for the longest time, I have had in depth discussions with students who viewed something on you tube or heard something through facebook and were now experts on 9/11, JFK, and fake moon landings; so I have really been in this to try to stop the untruth from spreading. I am in no way an expert on engineering, or structural analysis, or thermodynamics. However, I am a fairly intelligent person who understands that some things that seem too imposible to be true, can be. I am also a person who loves his country and hates to see insanity run amuck. Hopefully I can contribute and be an assets to the Meta-Bunk society.

When replying to your students I suggest asking them what is their best one piece of evidence supporting their claim. Research on Metabunk and counter the evidence with the source evidence used. Metabunkers should not be considered experts (though some are) but providers over evidence.

I usually just replay with good old fashioned common sense. I don't quote Meta-Bunk, but am just saying that it is a great resource to point in the right direction of actual truth. Most of the discussions came up in the years after Loose Change. These students believe anything that looks like it was professionally done. Which is the root of the problem for most truther material. If it looks good, it must be true, right?

hi!
I'm new to this forum and I like what I am reading so far. I never looked into these "conspiracy theories" till I started reading this book called, "The New World Order Manifest" and "The Five Families." More I read and do my research more I wake up and realize....

Hi, once embroiled in the world of conspiracy, i have come here to re-asses my understandings with some critical thinking and solid facts. :)

Howdy I honestly stumbled upon this site by accident and absolutely love it, so much good solid information. About me not much to say I was working IT up until August and then decided to go back to school and pick up an engineering degree.

I found this site by chance, too. I was impressed by its high Alexa ranking. And I liked the clouds-behind-the-sun hotos and debunking; I don't think I've ever heard that idea before; it's always nice to find a new puzzle.
.
Some people might like my debunking of rods, orbs, and lunar waves in here (if links are allowed)
www.big-lies.org/general/index.html#lunar-wave
though I'd imagine and hope this is not new to you.
.
Another interest of mine is the nuclear weapons as a fraud idea (eg nukelies.org ) and I'd be interested in debunking. But of course there are so many lies etc out there.

Hi and welcome!

Phew, that's a pretty... um.... diverse site, though there does seem to be a common theme. Is it yours, or a site you contribute to? Just wondering because the nukelies.org URL you say you're interested in debunking seems to redirect to the same place.

Cheers,

Ray Von

Yes, it's my site. For want of a better word, it's about 'revisionism', which I take to mean checking up on common beliefs, in case they have been generated as propaganda, or for careers, etc.. Debunking is part of that process, though it's useful to provide a new correct version.

Hello I stumbled on this site while googling. I have been caught up in the world of conspiracy theories and some of them I can see as being nonsense. However, many have merit and solid evidence supporting them. What is needed is a site that analyses claims using a scientific approach and is not hindered by predetermined bias either for or against. From what I have seen so far, this site seems to be aiming for that. I am not interested in analyses that decide beforehand what the answer to a particular issue is and then look for evidence to support that presupposition while at the same time failing to acknowledge contrary evidence. I have two university degrees: one in forest management and one in mechanical engineering. I currently work as a mechanical engineer.

Welcome. That is exactly what this site aims at. If there is anything on this site you think is wrong, please feel free to point out WHY it is wrong and we can correct and improve ALL our knowledge.

It would be interesting to see which conspiracies you feel have solid evidence. Please do a search on the site in case there are threads about them already and contribute, or start a new thread (following posting guidelines) if it isn't there already.

Hello. I've been watching a lot of 911 conspiracy videos on youtube lately and started discussing in the comment sections there. Got a bit frustrated with the tone there, and by the fact that no matter how much proof/evidence you give to people, they just run to the next alleged "proof" and discussions never go anywhere, and the energy spent is almost always wasted. I saw a few threads here where I wanted to comment about the physics of the collapses, and I think there are a few things that "911-truthers" keep bringing up which are fairly easy to debunk, although I haven't found them here yet.

yes, to the true "believers" providing evidence and rational explanations means nothing - if it did, well they would not believe the claptrap they do

all you can hope (and it is a noble hope) is to sway the "lurkers" who view these threads - just making 1 person stop and actually engage their brain and question what these <deleted - politeness policy> spout is worth it imo

Hello gang. I love conspiracy theories. Chemtrails are my favourite. I have been an aircraft engineer for thirty six years I never realised what was going on. Nobody told me or any of the people I work with about them. They have covered their tracks really well.
Since looking at "Lookup.org" I have made a tinfoil hat and spray myself with vinegar every day. I have told my friends at work about the conspiracy. At first they backed away, now they all believe. In fact, any unusual cloud formation over Manchester airport is pointed at as proof.
"Lookup.org" have been very supportive. All of my "Shrill" corrections to the "Facts" on FB were deleted and I was banned. Good job too! The truth I was saying was obviously not the truth they wanted to hear. I did try to Tweet them, asking for proof but their Twitter feed must have been down or something as they did not get back to me.
The Chemtrail mob have provided my friends and me with endless hours of fun. What gets me is they really believe, all the facts on this site and others, haven't changed their minds a bit.
Keep up the good work

I've been a compulsive lurker on these forums for a while now, haven't posted here because I'm not sure what if anything I could contribute to the discussions. Also, I'm afraid that my sense of humor and gut reactions to most subjects discussed here would result in violation of the politeness policy.

I'm just a fan of debate and critical thinking and enjoy watching members of this forum in action.

Hi every one , live in UK ,great too find a site that puts my mind at ease , my friend who I care for very much drives me mad with conspiracy theory's and gets quite heated about subjects all of which are on this site , never ever wanted to learn about truth before its just a necessity to calm my friend down ?i honestly think he's lost (rabbit hole) never coming back out , thanks again

Hello, atheist, rational skeptic, devoted fan of debunking here. My name is Joseph, 36 years old, Canadian. I came across this site after becoming fed up with the number of people on facebook buying into ridiculous "theories". Lack of critical thinking, logic and reason is a problem with all the disinformation on the internet these days. I like to set things straight when I am able. Show me evidence and I'll change my mind, show me conjecture and I'll shut you down...politely of course :) if more people applied the scientific method to every day reasoning we would be a far more enlightened culture.

Hello all, Like some above me have said I been coming to site for awhile now. I just really started diving into the world of conspiracy theory and have been trying my hand at "debating" the hoaxers on youtube about sandy hook and the Boston Bombing. I think it needless to say but I haven't really gotten anywhere with these youtubers without them calling me a shill or government agency. I've joined because I've read and seen the harm these theories can to the victim and witness of these tragedy, so I think sites like this are great to debunk paranoid and dumb beliefs people have. So I hope to contribute to the forums and have some good discussing.

Hi everyone!

Longtime lurker/visitor. Thanks to @benthamitemetric for the invitation.

My claims:

Jet fuel can melt steel beams - if in stoichiometric mixture.

Bush did not do 9/11 - he was in a class room listening to children read him a story.

9/11 was not an inside job - the planes came from the outside.

If you build a tower, pick up the top 1/4 and drop it on the rest, it will not exhibit axially symmetric straight-down collapse unless you intentionally engineer it to, i.e. in a domino set-up, and even then progression is not inevitable.

Howdy, all! I found this site recently by Googling one conspiracy or another, can't remember which of the zillions it was. :D I've been hanging around libertarian-ish and prepper forums online for quite a few years, so I run into some... let's say, very speculative theories on politics or medicine or whatever, quite frequently. Nice to find a forum that responds to bunk in a thorough yet polite manner.

Hi everyone. My name is Sue.

I am interested in history, religion, science, economics, politics and geo-politics.

I am not a big fan of Wikipedia, hence my username. I think it's a lazy and not always credible way, to bring info in an argument/discussion/debunking.

Anyway, looking forward to discussing.

Glad to be here.

Hi - Im Howard,

Ive tried posting a couple of times elsewhere on here but they were deleted so I still need to get to grips with the posting guidelines.

I have been a conspiracy Nut for over 10 years now. I still hold some of those beliefs, especially about a "New World Order".

However, I find this site fascinating and Im sure some conspiracy folks would say MetaBunk is part of the conspiracy!. Why do some people believe conspiracies are true and others, like on here, believe they are crazy?. The so called 'truth movement' (which I consider is highly toxic!) would argue that those who see the conspiracies are 'waking up'. This can lead onto a "New Age" belief of developing a 'higher consciousness' - seeing through all the lies.

Welcome Howard. Probably the thing you've not got to grips with is that we discuss individual claims of evidence, not broad arguments for broad theories. For example, we would not have a thread about "I think the media is controlled by a Jewish cabal because it seems biased towards Zionism", but rather we'd have threads like "the video in this news report was filmed with a green screen because you can see the guy's nose vanish at 1:04, hence it's deceptive". The former is subjective and intractable. The latter can be investigated and settled.

Greetings & Salutations fellow Rationalists..

I am SOO glad I found this site.. I can't begin to estimate how many times I have needed this kind of cataloged info during Facebook arguments..

I'm a 50yr old former US Marine Electronics Tech who is dismayed DAILY by the plummeting level of intelligence that gets displayed online and IRL (Bill O'Reilly's "tide comes in, tide goes out" quip was, almost literally, painful to my ears).

Keep up the good work,
JarheadJim

I stumbled upon your site when I was looking at the flat earther claims and googled "debunked". Good site, well layed out. I am a runner and listen to podcasts alot, my favorite is SGU and Art Bell reruns. Does Metabunk have podcast?

Not yet. I'm not sure it would work, as generally the topics discussed here have a strong visual component. But I'm certainly considering it.

Hello, everyone.

I came across Metabunk seven days ago.

I came to the site by way of this: https://www.metabunk.org/debunked-alien-base-on-the-moon-triangle-of-dots-photo-artifact.t2965/

I stayed and looked around because of this: https://www.metabunk.org/politeness-policy.t1224/

I don’t, as a rule, join forums and participate. This is only the second forum that I thought was interesting enough to do so.

I am a 57 years old, male.

I think the first bunk that I can recall was the bible. Now in my defense I was five years old. This introduction, what I can recall of it, was in the form of a series of red bible story books. Really all I can recall are the wonderful pictures.

My first introduction to religion was Presbyterian.

I think I was lucky. Neither my mom nor my dad were religious. My mom was brought up as a Roman Catholic, my father, interestingly I have no idea what his beliefs were. They joined the Presbyterian church because of a good friend’s of our family.

I am an agnostic. Interesting word I had to look it up out of curiosity. That original sin thing.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/agnostic

1. a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

2. a person who denies or doubts the possibility of ultimate knowledge in some area of study.

3. a person who holds neither of two opposing positions on a topic

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/agnostic

1. a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

2. a person who is unwilling to commit to an opinion about something <political agnostics>

I included both of these because of the difference in the first definition. The inclusion of ‘that human knowledge is limited to experience’. This inclusion troubles me.
Content from External Source
I prefer the second of the two dictionary quotes.

My background is in computer software. The telecommunication industry. Working on software for digital communication test equipment.

This forum is interesting to read. It’s fun to see people exercising their intelligence to confront bunk.

To educate.

Edited to conform to posting standard and to clarify.

Hi! I came across this site googling conspiracy theories. My interest lies in how and why they develop and evolve in an...anthropological sense, I guess. Though my science is mostly armchair so I am here to learn as well.

Hi , let me introduce myself. Metbaunk provides welcome respite from some of the absurd [..] conspiracy and related theories that seem to flood the internet in our times .

Look forward to doing my bit in the debunking business ,

Yours in critical thinking and investigation .

Good morning :)

Long time lurker finally taking the plunge after seeing a thread to which I could add something. I'm a space enthusiast with an interest in Apollo and I run my own website debunking the claims of moon landing deniers. Other breeds [..] are available and I like debunking those too.

I particularly like to collect original documents and photographs, which are very handy when someone shouts 'Look! Aliens!'.

Hello @One Big Monkey - that's a name I recognise from Above Top Secret, which is the place that got me started on the chemtrail theory. I also enjoy debunking the Apollo claims but I've been neglecting that area lately...

For anyone who does want Apollo debunking resources I can highly recommend OBM's website: http://onebigmonkey.com/apollo/apollo.html

Hi and welcome OBM

Looking at your website and specifically the quote by Eugene Cernan reminded me of my two little twins, who went to the science museum (in London) as part of a school project last year

They actually met Eugene (I believe he was the last man to walk on the moon) who was doing a talk to the kids

How cool is that!!!

Hello :D

I am a 23 year old student in Marin County, California.

I've been a lurker for several months now. Metabunk piqued my interest back in 2014 when several of my friends were confused about certain conspiracy theories circulating around the web. I was very skeptical about claims that relied heavily on coincidence and hearsay, so I searched around and found Metabunk as a resource for helping my friends and I have useful discussions about conspiracy theories.

What recently prompted me to spend more time on Metabunk was a debate I had with a family friend about 9/11. They firmly believed in the bunk about the twin towers being vaporized by a nuke. In my attempts to present an argument I brought up the Titanic as an example, and to my dismay they also believed the sinking of the Titanic was a set-up. Oh boy..

So, I'm glad Metabunk exists. (Note: This family friend knew of Metabunk, but said it's all a bunch of lies.)

This thread is for any first time poster to (optionally) post an introductory "hi everyone" post, which will also get you "verified" (meaning you can post without anti-spam restrictions) once it has been approved.

A few words on who you are and how you ended up here would be appreciated. Or just say hi!

Hello. I'm Chris. I have a B.A. degree in the Humanities from the University of Texas at Austin. Earlier, I attended the University of Miami (FL) and Georgia State University. Now retired, I was employed by UT-Austin in the Utilities and Energy Management Department as a Utility Stations Operator for 17 years. I operated Chilling Stations and Power Plants for the University. Before enrolling in UT, I had experience in utility/road construction and land surveying. I reside in Austin, TX.

Hi y'all! I've been a lurker on this site for approximately eight months and have now decided to "join the conversation". When I discovered this wonderful site, I was impressed by the amount research various users on this site had assembled in order to refute a lot of the conspiracy claims that run so rampant on the Internet .I dig the the idea of a place where discussion is allowed without the need for foul language and insults. I also like the policy of investigating individual claims of evidence as opposed to having to respond to a " Gish gallop" post. As for myself there's not much I really feel obligated to say other than the fact that I have a strong interest in things relating to Music and aviation ( the latter comes in handy when addressing the claims of chemtrail advocates) so yeah :)
