Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

Read the posing guidelines, look at a few threads to see how to lay out the claim, then make a thread about it in the relevant section
Alternately, you can make a thread in the Open Discussion forum, where the guidelines are pretty lax and you can basically just post a question.

Or, to enhance (well...not "enhance"...just "add") to the advice from 'Hevach', above?

Firstly, remain polite.

I'd suggest scrolling up to 'page 1' and reading carefully what Mick West wrote.

Then...secondly...remain polite. Remain on-topic...and polite. Try to keep it on-point....

IF? "After" your first on-topic point is attempted to be taken "off-topic"...try to steer it back to topic...politely. (This might not always work. The "polite" approach then is to simply drop out, and engage no further).

OH!! And of course, 'where were my manners??' Welcome to all new members.

Hi
Im new and have just been looking through your forum and have enjoyed it so far. I am a conspiracy believer, because many are true. But this is the first site I have ever joined related to conspiracies... and it's a debunking one, lol. So why join?
Im not here to change opinions or bash down the opposition, I'm looking for real information and so far your site is providing. I believe the conspiracy sites are confusing many issues and muddying the waters and making me a little nutty. o_O
So here I am.
Also I just find some conspiracies entertaining and a fun little what if.
The conspiracy I don't find entertaining and am looking for more information on, has to do with the global paedophile rings; elites, Catholic church, entertainment industry.
I have started looking on your site for old threads on this issue, haven't found any yet, if you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Having had family members stuck in one of the Church's hellhole, a place called Kneerkol ( once again in the local news for their abuses), I am aware of the truth of some conspiracies and the evil that works them.
I am here for the benefit of your members sceptical brains, I need that to sift through the bull to find the truth.
:)

Metabunk is about debunking/examining "SPECIFIC claims of EVIDENCE". While some members are interested in 'conspiracies', that really is not the focus of Metabunk.

Neerkol? you mean?

Welcome to Metabunk. Please read the Posting Guidelines and Politeness Policy. (I like your profile pic ;)

lol my spelling, that damn K.. thankyou. And yes I've read the guidelines Im trying to work out which question to ask and how, so I can get the benefit. If I look at a specific conspiracy and break it down into points, and than raise those points here? A fact checking?
Also do you know if any questions in this area have been raised before?
Lastly... hi :)

hi.

raising points.. hmm maybe use the 'open discussion' forum but that's still not technically how this site works. You want to look for "claims of evidence" and present it. Not just "I think" or "it looks like" or "it might be possible that..." stuff.

Look around the site for examples of proper threads. (Not in chitchat, open discussion or rambles). read the posting guidelines and admins will help you as you go to get the hang of things.

Well, Neerkol is obviously no secret at this point, but if you had credible evidence that it was part of some big,
shadowy, evil "global paedophile ring," I'd certainly take a shot at evaluating it...look at what you have,
pick a claim, and start a thread. And welcome. :)

Aha, another RAH fan. Excellent. :)

Hey there. Just signed up.

A couple of months ago I came across an article pretty much poking at the absurdity of the YouTube flat-Earth and "fake moon" movement... So I felt the need to see for myself that people were really believing these things...

To my initial surprise, my mind was blown, to say the least.

I've now been slightly sucked into debunking these conspiracies for the sake of science...

Nonetheless, this forum is beyond awesome. I'll mostly continue to lurk unless I have something relevant to add. Just wanted to say hello, and to keep up the excellent work!

Hi. I was looking around for some info on some wild claims and came across this site. What I found made a positive impression on me. :)

Just finished a paper for a class on the philosophy of climate change and I wish I would have found this place earlier. I nearly fell down the rabbit hole of misinformation but just focused on academic papers and finished.
Now that I am finished I have been creeping around on Fb and now ready to fall down this rabbit hole.
Shared 2 links from these forums and I'm already getting told to gtfo, so something must be right.

Hope to add to the discussion at some point, but may be a long fall :)

Hello longtime lurker (on Sandy Hook topic) occasional dabbler in other CTs, member of JREF forum and regular debater on YouTube videos. Looking forward to evidential discussions :)

hello all. I found this website today and it seems like a good resource for double checking stuff and avoiding confirmation bias, as well as making me aware about other cognitive biases that I had and didn't know existed .

Hi all, new registered member (long time lurker) because I wanted to post a reply to a thread of a news story today that's close and dear to my heart (and the way it's being "reported" out there is giving me an ulcer).

Background: I have to drive long distances a couple of times a week for work and I find myself listening to conspiracy shows and laughing hysterically at the claims. Makes the drive go a LOT faster! I guess if you did put a gun to my head and wanted me to pick a conspiracy to believe in it would be TWA800. Otherwise, everything else is pretty much nonsense in my humble opinion.

I am looking forward to contributing here. Thanks!

Hi I am a new member who loved this site after first browse. I think this type of website is badly needed to counterbalance the direction of the internet, namely the right wing media complex (RWMC) and the millions of its fans who are so deeply deceived. That complex often includes exploited mentally ill, uneducated, racists and unsophisticated who become disciples, spreading disinformation and propaganda all over the Internet, as if it is a disease. Sadly "internet Christians" have also aligned with this group. In fact I seriously believe there should be some type of professional recognition of right wing media disease and more studies done on how it damages this country. I am not a hardcore liberal though I most frequently lean that way. Conspiracy theorists are frequently a subgroup of RWMC in my opinion. I think they all have reached serious proportions.

The War on Science deeply concerns me.

They have their counterparts on the left, too. Anti-vaxxers are the biggest ones on the left right now.

Some of them ebb and flow, too. Martial law has always been a popular one on the far right, but it manages to rear its head on the left occasionally as well, particularly when there's a Republican president (it was briefly a popular one on the left when Giuliani wanted to stay mayor past his term because of 9/11 and people claimed Bush would try the same thing). We've got a two-term Democrat in the US right now, so there's a lot more flow than ebb, but give a Republican a narrow win and it'll reemerge on the left again like it did in 2000/1/2.

What evidence do you have of "counterparts on the left". Anti-vaxxers are the best you got? I think if statistics were done they would find just as many right wing mothers who have fallen prey for the massive amount of false anti-vax media. Just because the celebrity anti-vaxxers are liberal does not mean all anti-vaxxers are liberals. There is no other group that even comes to a tiny fraction of the right wing media complex. Not even close. As for Giuliani, it was so big on the left that it has never made real journalism as a third term for Bush are you kidding? Even Republicans had enough of Bush, let alone the left. Your anecdotal information does seem like what I see on right wing media machine.

9-11 trutherism started on the left. It's often forgotten that so did what became birtherism (McCain's citizenship was questioned long before Obama's, and Eisenhower's 14 year residency long before that, but even Obama's was first challenged by other Democrats during the primaries). The financial and banking conspiracy theories around the Great Recession are one of those fascinating ones that started out as almost purely left wing and then rapidly flipped to almost pure right wing in the space of one election. Closely related are the Cheney/Halliburton theories from the Iraq War, which were mainly left wing.

Speaking of the Iraq War, every war in living memory came with mostly left wing conspiracy theories about the "real" motivations or despicable acts being intentionally perpetrated by the US military for nebulous reasons. In the 2004 election the Swiftboaters managed to briefly take one of those theories for right wing use, but it was originally the wheelhouse of the far left.

The NSA theories were largely left wing for a long time, they currently skew right because of who's in office, but the last several times the NSA became a scandal it went the other way. Likewise the PATRIOT act related theories were largely left wing, and along with them came the 2001-2008 flavor of left wing martial law and related theories. The left is heavily invested in man police related conspiracy theories right now. The right is as well, and their theories often line up, but motivations are very different.

The Monsanto theories are heavily skewed to the left, and with them all the other GMO related theories. The left is almost exclusively responsible for all the gluten and BPA and other related bunk. Almost the entire section on this forum for quack medicine comes from the left.

Actually, I'd even say that, because of that last paragraph, the bunk on the left is more dangerous. False flaggers are terrible people, but so far they've only caused emotional trauma, even the one who got himself arrested wasn't particularly dangerous, just possessed of a terminal shortage of common sense. Sovereign citizens and "guvmint takin mah guns" types have been responsible for the occasional murder or police shooting, but anti-vaxx and quack medicine is bunk with a body count in the hundreds, has set back the eradication of preventable diseases by decades, lead thousands of people away from life saving medicine, and millions into unhealthy diets.

Politics might prime the pump a little, and it has a big influence on whose ideas you're open to, but stupid knows no affiliation.

I think Hevach got it right, but Nogero is perhaps referring to the intensity of current popular conspiracy theories. I've heard my share of crackpot theories from wayward lefty friends, but I never heard of any proponents of those same theories stalking people (like some Sandy Hook CT's) or participating en masse in an embarrassing situation (the current Jade Helm debacle). IMO, that's what seems all out of whack today.

Hello, I've been lurking for a while, but I really love the site, and your demonstrations Mick, particularly concerning WTC 7, have made me see how that weird looking implosion actually happened.

Hello,
I found an hopefully debunkable photo of a malaysia 777 being transported in the jungle. Take a look at it in the mh370 section.

Hello everyone :) been lurking for a few days and decided to sign up. So yeah, I'm Charles, 23 and from Montreal. I guess you could say I'm an aspiring video game developer, philosophy enthusiast and lover of music.

I started looking up info on aliens, UFOs and stuff when I was still a teenager. I've always kept it as a "Meh, what if? It's fun to think about but it's probably just bs". Never really took all that stuff too seriously. Outside of 9/11 I don't really have an opinion on these things. However, two months ago I came across geoengineering.org and I wish I hadn't. It sent me in a downwards spiral of utter terror and fear. Everything seemed to make sense ; their presentation is top-notch (understandably so, they believe to be doing the right thing so it makes sense they're going out of their way to convince people), they're rallying a lot of scientists to their cause and it just intuitively felt right. I basically broke down for a week and my girlfriend soon followed. At this point I was unstable to the point I lost all critical thinking ability and went down the rabbit hole. Hollow earth, artificial sun, gravity is a myth, NWO, you name it. At some point I would hear a plane go by and think the glass ceiling is breaking down.

By some kind of miracle, I've managed to regain a little sense and decided to look up "chemtrails debunked" in Google. I found the big debunking topic here by Mick and that's when I realized how naive I've been and easy it is to make something look real. A big lesson I hadn't learned yet, for some reason. So this is both a "hello!" message as much as a "THANK YOU" for everyone here going through these huge claims in a logical, methodical and sensible way. The likes of Dane act in good faith but as they say... the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Ah, warm welcomes. Enjoy your stay here and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hey!

Last semester (Spring 2015) I took a course called "Fads and Fallacies in Archaeology." We learned some reasoning, critical thinking skills, and methods to find hoaxes or mistakes in archaeological history. We also delved a little bit into the thought processes of those who believe in hoaxes and conspiracies.

This was one of my favorite classes so obviously I've been doing further reading since the semester has ended. Luckily, I happened to stumble on this site, which seems to promote and use the exact methods we used in class to debunk hoaxes and false information. It's really eye-opening to see these methods put into practice, instead of exploring the concepts in a sterile classroom environment.

Great stuff is happening on this site. Thanks for making/maintaining it! I'm looking forward to honing my debunking-chops.

Hi I ended up here the same way as everyone else's ,research .I'm mid age well edegacted in many forms .

Hello all!

Dutch citizens, 48 years young and very much involved in unrevealing everything around MH17. That's most likely also the forum i will follow mostly.

Love the site. Originally started debunking Kent Steadman of cyberspaceorbit fame years and years ago (RIP). Now though it feels like a losing battle against the endless litany of youtube videos and charlatans by the truckload. Great to have some company for this perilous journey!

Hello all, I am new to the topic of contrails vs chem-trails and find it very scary to speculate but can't help but wonder the reason why I saw two lines in the sky turn into one cloud. Water vapor,,no way. Chemicals,,,I don't know. UGH..

apart from the fact water vapor is invisible so clouds are made of water droplets or ice crystals, why NO way? the water vapor can condense into the trail you see which is just a straight cloud. Why can't it act like any other cloud when the wind blows it about? Water is a chemical too by the way.

the same reason two clouds will merge into one cloud. But feel free to ask any question in the chemtrail/contrail forum or "open discussion" forum.

This thread is only for welcomes. so... Welcome!

Hello everybody, I am a recently retired airline pilot that has a lot of experience, albeit from a different perspective, regarding contrails. It is hard for me to believe the amount of misinformation spread by some misinformed people regarding the "Chemtrail conspiracy". I usually can hold my own in an argument, but occationally the chemtrailers throw up a picture of some experimental aircraft I have no answer for. I have found several threads that will help me debunk these photos, thanks.

Hello everyone, I am interested in everything and finding the Truth about everything. I found this site through a friend.

While trying to explain the shadows from contrails, I found contrail science... and that led me here.
I am a retired fighter pilot and airline pilot.
