Last night I went out with local police to spot drone flying over New Jersey, here's what I saw. We drove to Round Valley Reservoir and the officer pointed to lights moving low over the tree line. Sometimes they were solid white light, others flashed of red and green.THREAD

We oriented ourselves with a flight tracker app to help us distinguish from airplanes. We often saw about 5-7 lights at a time that were low and not associated with aircraft we could see on the tracker app. Some hovered while others moved across the horizon. 2/11

We saw a few that looked like they were moving in small clusters of 2-4. We clearly saw several that would move horizontally and then immediately switch back in the opposite direction in maneuvers that plane can't do. 3/11

The police officer said they see them out every night. They only seem to start when it gets dark and they disappear before dawn. They get reports that they sometimes fly low over homes, especially up in the hills. 4/11

The officer said they've tried to get closer with use of a helicopter but that the drones would turn off the lights and go dark if approached. 5/11

The parking lot at the reservoir had a number of cars of people coming to take a look for themselves. Several shared with me their own stories of having seen some up close. One described them being the size of the hood of a car. 6/11

I went to multiple locations across Hunterdon county to get different vantage points. This is a more rural part of NJ. It's uncertain why it's one of the more active area for reported activity. We are seeing reports through other parts of the state. 7/11

Any images or video footage people get, the police urge them to submit to the FBI, but I haven't gotten any follow up yet from the FBI on their investigation and what they've compiled. 8/11

Homeland Security Secretary briefed last week on new technology they were deploying but we need details on what those efforts have yielded and if more resources are needed. If they haven't fully identified the devices yet we still should know what is being done. 9/11

This has gone on for weeks. It's hard to understand how with the technology we have we aren't able to track these devices to determine origin and this makes me much more concerned about our capabilities more broadly when it comes to drone detection and counter measures. 10/11

I'll continue to track these developments and share as much as possible to the people of NJ that deserve more answers than they are getting. END
This is getting a lot of attention. So would be good to try to track down what he is seeing, if not nefarious drones.

With no time, not even approx it's gonna be impossible to tie down any of the lights in the videos.
Correct but it's enough to show that the claim there was no air traffic in that direction is totally false.

Here is one hour of traffic (7.30 - 8.30pm local time last night, Dec 12) to the east of Round Valley reservoir (the lake visible on the left of the screen). The views in the photos and videos are between north east and southeast. Anyone want to have a go at counting these?

For reference, the right hand edge of this screenshot is about 30 miles from the reservoir.

I think from this description the misinterpretation is entirely due to parallax. People imagine they're looking at something like a flat screen, with things moving in two dimensions only, and can't adapt their minds to comprehend the three-dimensional space in which planes (or indeed drones or helicopters) move.

I wonder how many people have launched their own drones to get a better look at the drones...

You'd think a lot would, but if they did you'd think we'd be starting to see footage of THOSE drones -- is anybody seeing that, I'm not yet.

Changed the title to reflect that Andy Kim is the current senator from New Jersey as he was appointed to fill out Bob Melendez's current term.

Andy Kim has posted an update stating that he believes "most of" the drone sightings are planes.

Whilst I agree that that's better than many of the alternatives the cynic in me sees some "I did nothing wrong by bullshitting and spreading misinformation" aspect to it, and is also able to extract from the thread a message of "please perform a distributed denial-of-service attack on the government". Dear kids, please constantly tug on coat-sleeves.

Fair play to him, really. He's only really guilty of jumping the gun. No real excuse for not doing what he did before assuming people weren't mistaken.

He's at least acknowledged that it's understandable that people were probably mistaken.

Cos it can't be ignored that we were in a period where people weren't looking for drones but were seeing drones. Whereas we are now in a period where people are looking for drones. There's people now who WANT there to be drones.

And people do own drones. I assume that people who own drones use their drones (and, most likely, not for nefarious purposes). Look for drones and you might see a drone. But that doesn't mean that people were seeing drones.
