Ryan Graves - UAP photo from Airliner (Rocket launch)

This image of a 'UAP' was shared by Ryan Graves on the Joe Rogan Podcast. This is the photo, taken by the pilot of an unknown plane, unknown date (2022?) , unknown location

That looks very much like a spacerocket degassing burn, possibly a Space X rocket. This video shows a similar phenomenon from a launch in 2022.

I have dm'd Ryan (@uncertainvector) on Twitter and asked for the date of the photograph. Hopefully he'll get back to me. If it is a rocket degassing burn there should have been a launch a few hours previous.

Do we know the approximate size of the gas cloud?

Also Ryan relays the pilot witness claimed to see something that appeared stationary then accelerate to very fast speeds. If we could figure out the location of the plane and trajectory of the rocket this could be explained by parallax.

I must say I do find it slightly surprising SpaceX doesn't give ATC a heads up so they can alert pilots in the area

That one looks almost exactly like Grave's.

Which area? The one I knew about near me, post #2, was seen from Southern California all the way to the Oregon border and maybe parts of Nevada and Arizona. And there were 2 Space X launces that day, one from each coast. That's a lot of area to alert folks too, just in the USA.

Even if various ATC areas were alerted, I don't think they would say anything to all the aircraft in their particular region of responsibility, unless maybe some aircraft reported it. Certainly not my area of expertise, but I think the idea is to safely keep track of and move various aircraft in and out of each area with a minimum of chitchat about what Elon is doing.

I suppose Space X could publish a pilot's awareness sorta thing? Be on the lookout for an off-gassing reentry stage in these areas. But I get the idea commercial pilots have enough stuff to deal with as it is. A NOTAM near the launch site is important, where one might see a reentry, not so much.

I don't know, but maybe new member @Harry Paget could enlighten us as a commercial airline pilot.

they could coordinate with the FAA to perhaps file it as PIREP (pilot report). PIREPs are typically used for weather phenomena such as clouds, so it's not too far off its true purpose.

NUFORC UFO Sighting 174936

Occurred: 2023-02-27 19:54 Local
Reported: 2023-03-08 17:00 Pacific
Duration: 4-5 min
No of observers: 10 - Pilot

Location: Atlanta, GA, USA
Location details: Over Atlanta

Shape: Cylinder
Characteristics: Aura or haze around object

UAP spotted over Atlanta from 37000 feet

Preface: I am an Airline Pilot with 30 years of flying experience. I currently fly for a Pt. 121 major airline.

At approx 0052Z on February I observed unexplained phenomenon at my 2 o'clock at what appeared to be near my altitude or above. I am not sure of the distance. At first I thought it to be a reflection in my windscreen, but after moving my head around and point of view, the object stayed steady. The object appeared rectangular or oblong and milky white. My first officer returned from the forward lav and observed the object moving briskly southbound. After I asked him "what is that", the object moved at rapid, steady speed southbound and disappeared. I snapped a picture to verify the object at 0054. I regret not taking a video, but was taken and confused by what I was seeing. A few minutes later, ATL center asked if anyone had seen the light or object because there was a lot of chatter on guard frequency (121.5). I informed them I had and got a phone number to an ATL controller and shared the picture later after the flight. Another Frontier flight captained by a colleague also witnessed the UAP, along with numerous other aircraft on guard. I have never witnessed anything like it in almost 30 years of flying. The object appeared to be over Atlanta and we were at FL370.

There were many other flight crews that witnessed the UAP. I had a text dialogue after the flight with an 18 year air traffic controller. He said his supervisor was filling out UAP paperwork and that he had never heard or seen anything like this. I have filed a NASA aviation report as well.

At 0054UTC on 28 Feb 2023 there were 3 Frontier Aircraft close to Atlanta, but only one was at 37000ft - FFT1075 flying Chicago to Orlando. (All Frontier aircraft have a reg in the format N***FR [source], so I filtered the ADSB Exchange to show only those with that reg format at the time of the sighting)

View of from the aircraft approaching Atlanta at 0054hrs... (Google Earth with Black Marble layer visible) - it matches the UAP photo.

There was a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch an hour and a half earlier.

Looking south from around Atlanta at that time the pilots would be looking towards the constellation Puppis. The stars of Puppis and the rocket body / "UAP" are visible in the original photo:

I found the original Orbital Element Details for the G6-1 launch on 27 Feb 2023.

We can drop the TLE and KML files into Sitrec and get a close approximation as to how the G6-1 launch rocket & satellite stack would have looked from the Atlanta area. Its a match!

Video of the pass as seen by the pilots at x 20 speed.

I think that's pretty much everything in the photo identified. Date, time, location, aircraft & UAP. Although I'm a bit disappointed that I haven't worked out the pilot's name yet.

I must say, when these types of cases come up, I used to follow along and try to learn how to do it myself. Now when I see one, I set a mental timer and sit back to see how long it will take @flarkey to figure it out. We also need a golf clap emoji

A video, in real time (ish) showing how it gets worked out could be just as entertaining as any UFO or drone video on YouTube. Follow along with Flarkey as he tries to identify the unidentified in a limited amount of time. I know Mick has done a few like that, but we need some more manufactured drama like a ticking clock in the corner or maybe a line of free pints that gets smaller the longer it takes to solve the case.

I was thinking of doing a screen recording recreation of how I solved the cross in the sky video that was just a powerline marker.

You should, that was fascinating.

Now this is even better, multiple contestants working out a UAP.

For the UK crowd it would have to be a bit like the Great British Bake Off. There would be debunkers in a room, each with a screen in front of them and then the host would show a UAP on the big screen as the timer starts. Mick's a bit too droll to be a host, but he could be a judge. There would need to be some doughball albino guy and a rejected Elvis impersonator or other equally outlandish personalities that then go around to the various contestants at their desk to report the progress. When times up, the various solutions are judged and someone gets tossed out.

The USA version would be similar, but we'd replace the Elvis/doughball duo with some pseudo-experts like Ryan Graves or Travis Taylor that comment and pontificate on how they think the contestants are doing. And the contestants would need to do a lot of smack-talking and chest thumping. The judge would be someone like Professor Dave, who won't hold back at pointing out the contestants' shortcomings.

I think we're on to something ;)

A general educational video for pilots would probably be best.
Announcing specific launches and places where they might be observed would, these days become very regular announcements. Probably don't want to fill the airwaves and distract the pilots that often. These are things they need to understand if they see them, but let's not distract them more than necessary.

This place is amazing. Fantastic work!

I received an email from Ryan Graves today. I won't cut and paste it directly here, but I'd say it was tentatively positive. Ryan asked how the rocket launch explanation could explain the reports from the aircrew regarding the 'rapid acceleration to the south' of the UAP, and the eye witness report from a location 300miles to the south. I'll reply to him with my thoughts.

But his suggestion of another UAP report from a separate ground based eye-witness prompted me to look back on the NUFORC Databank for the same date/time as he pilot's report, and wow.... check out all these reports that were likely the same SpaceX launch...

Was that in the original claim from the JRE appearance? If not, then as you appeared to solve what the pilots saw, this would seem a bit of "moving the goal posts". Obviously not entirely, as the NUFROC site indicates lots of people saw this.

yes, he did mention the additional witness on Joe Rogan.
