Time: Feb 06 2025 / 10:32 (GMT +1) Location Holland, Breezanddijk

I was driving home south from Harlingen in Holland (Breezanddijk) and we watched an object that looking to be on fire falling out of the clouds. Annoyingly the barrier stopped us from seeing it hitting the sea, and we were driving fast so footage is poor.

The object sat on the surface (picture) and then a barrier blocked our view for around 30 seconds and when clear again, the object had gone.

Any suggestions as to what it could've been? I was thinking possibly a small air craft.

Thanks!

This is looking towards the mainland from just after the midpoint of the Breezanddijk road bridge, my initial thoughts were it might be an on fire wind turbine, but I am not sure of the angle. The claim is it is descending but I cannot see that in the video.

possible space junk?

I don't think it's actually falling, if I stabilise and track the object the smoke trail grows but the gap does not seem to close much between railing and object, it's really hard to demonstrate though because the zoom keeps changing and the tilt as well

| Defense will hold shooting drills from 4 to 7 February. These take place from the shooting range Breezanddijk (Afsluitdijk).
The military exercises are carried out with different weapon systems and take place between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Hmm I might have to track the section against the horizon instead, the problem is the zoom levels are all over the place for that part.

Just adding some detail to the idea that this is a windmill fire, with most of the windmill obscured by fog/haze.

The smoke is the visible part of a column of heated air rising due to its lower density compared to the surrounding cooler air. As the heated air and smoke rise, they cool and interact with the surrounding atmosphere, leading to turbulence, causing the initially smooth flow to become chaotic.

This turbulent motion creates the illusion of a trail left by a descending object.

This remains speculation, but that's how it would work.

I don't understand how the smoke would be visible, but not the windmill.

Could it be a contrail?

Some arguments against the windmill hypothesis:
  • On reddit, the original poster said the location was "a few min drive a way from the wind farm. And before we started recording, we had been watching it come from the clouds. So I don't think it's related to the turbines in the area."
  • Other photos of wind-energy system fires show very black smoke coming from the turbine, not white, and blowing horizontally with the wind.
  • One of the photos is of an object on the surface of the water. (Though the poster said they lost track of the plume behind a barrier, so it's not 100% clear that it's the same object.)
Wind turbine fires seem to be related to wind turbines in operation -- that is, they fail while the wind is blowing -- or from lightning strikes. Amsterdam Airport weather report records 93% humidity, mostly cloudy, 8 mph winds about that time, after patches of fog and mist most of the morning. Does that wind strength match the plume we're seeing? You'd think wind strong enough to cause the turbine to fail would be blowing the smoke more horizontally, if that was the source. But I don't know.

The nighttime one looks interesting, there's absolutely no sound coming from that object.

Article:
The Breezanddijk shooting area has a shooting point on the Afsluitdijk. The unsafe zone is located above the IJsselmeer. The area is used by the Royal Netherlands Army and the Navy for testing 155 mm and 25 mm ammunition.

not sure what im looking at in this video. these things might be vaguely the shape of the thing in the water..but they dont seem that big??

It was reported to disappear within 30 seconds. Because of the ephemeral nature of the display, I think the best candidate is a hand held rocket parachute flare. Relatively close to the camera. The boat from which it was launched is in the fog, while the flare is above the thickest part of the fog. The flare was not seen while ascending, as this type of flare does not ignite immediately.

The first facebook link probably explains it (but thx for posting OP), as it translates to: | The Department of Defense is holding shooting drills from Feb. 4 to 7. thats the same as what i posted in comment #6. (which is why i keep talking about the afsluitdijk)
