I think I can spot the first issue -- FEMA and other government agencies are doing a LOT more than just handing somebody a check. I think the top and bottom of that needs scrutiny. As I am doing airports today, I can't dive into it deeply but can start looking when I get home or if we get a delay. In the meantime, anybody feeling the urge please dive in!

The $750 is for immediate relief, and only a small portion of the federal money being offered. FOX (an outlet that provides severely biased "information") cut off their clip of Harris speaking immediately after she mentioned the $750 as if that was the whole amount of relief.

At a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Trump strongly suggested that Americans who lost their homes in the hurricane were only being offered $750 in federal aid.

"They're offering them $750, to people whose homes have been washed away. And yet we send tens of billions of dollars to foreign countries that most people have never heard of. They're offering them $750. They've been destroyed, these people have been destroyed," Trump said.

He added, "Think of it: We give foreign countries hundreds of billions of dollars and we're handing North Carolina $750."

Trump's claim is wrong. As FEMA explained earlier in the week on social media and on a web page it created to combat misinformation about the response, $750 is merely the immediate, upfront aid survivors can get to cover basic, pressing needs like food, water, baby formula and emergency supplies.

Survivors are also eligible to apply for additional forms of assistance, such as to pay for temporary housing and home repairs, that can be worth thousands of dollars; the current maximum amount for home repair assistance, for example, is $42,500.

The $750 is FEMA's Serious Needs Assistance program. It is meant for the following:

https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/documents/fema_ia-quick-reference_serious-needs.pdf

What is Serious Needs Assistance?
Serious Needs Assistance is money to pay for emergency supplies like water, food, first aid, breast-feeding supplies, infant formula, diapers, personal hygiene items, or fuel for transportation. It is available in all disasters declared for Individual Assistance.

As to the second point,

Article:
"No money is being diverted from disaster response needs. FEMA's disaster response efforts and individual assistance is funded through the Disaster Relief Fund, which is a dedicated fund for disaster efforts," FEMA said in its post. "Disaster Relief Fund money has not been diverted to other, non-disaster related efforts."

FEMA added: "FEMA has enough money right now for immediate response and recovery needs. If you were affected by Helene, do not hesitate to apply for disaster assistance as there is a variety of help available for different needs."

FEMA did administer $640 million in grants from Customs and Border Protection in 2024 and about $364 million in 2023 to cities and counties that serve migrants. However, that program called the Shelter and Services Program, or SSP, is separate from FEMA's disaster relief fund which is more than $20 billion.

As with the the image in the first post, this isn't evidence it's a claim (I think i heard Deirdre make this point about these types of memes before). There is no way to know where and when the video was taken, I done a google search and found one reddit thread where a commenter said the saw it on 4Chan (always the place to go when you've got a massive scoop).

My prediction is that it's a monumental screw up (let's face it a helicopter messing up one camp isn't exactly destroying all hurricane efforts), or it's from somewhere else and it will be memory holed by the "free thinkers" and they'll move on to a new shiny toy in a day or two.

My limited experience with pilots, one ex-military, is that they're all pretty impressive indeviduals.

However, I remember that the Black Hawk pilot on the Bin Laden mission crashed. So, even the best of the best can make mistakes.

I think this was a blunder.

The where and when are not identified, but the fact that a helicopter is approaching at all suggests it is either coming to bring more supplies or to transport people rescued from danger. Carelessly flown it may be, perhaps by someone who is less experienced in flying a chopper, but hardly an intentional "destruction".

Quite possible that these pilots have been doing overtime with relief flights and might be fatigued.

If it's current footage, the lack of provenance is not instilling confidence that it is.

(maybe the donation site was set up too close to a helipad?)

X community note:
The helicopter was not unmarked. It's a Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk operated by the Connecticut National Guard.
Note the timestamp (23:38) in the Flight Radar screenshot is in UTC time so local Burnsville, NC time would be 7:38 p.m. EDT

It looks like these helicopters don't need or have to have any markings.
they're military, they're not supposed to stand out like a commercial or air rescue helicopter

on close-up, it probably has a tail number, but it might be black on that olive background

What flight radar screenshot?

Thanks everybody for input on this. I suspect we are about to see more, similar, stuff as Milton crosses Florida and the aftermath is dealt with.

Western NC Congressman Chuck Edwards has posted to his official website and released to the press a statement debunking "untrustworthy sources trying to spark chaos by sharing hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and hearsay about hurricane response efforts across our mountains." It is not particularly useful to MetaBunk, as it debunks by merely asserting that the bunk is wrong and explaining what the truth is, without digging into supporting evidence. But I wanted to include it here if for no other reason than it illustrates the breadth of the rumors being spread. So here it is, in full: (Chimney Rock is a town and tourist attraction in his District, NC-11)

Dear Friend,

Over the past 10 days, I have been proud of how our mountain communities have come together to help one another. We have seen a level of support that is unmatched by most any other disaster nationwide; but amidst all of the support, we have also seen an uptick in untrustworthy sources trying to spark chaos by sharing hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and hearsay about hurricane response efforts across our mountains.

While it is true, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's response to Hurricane Helene has had its shortfalls, I'm here to dispel the outrageous rumors that have been circulated online:

  1. Hurricane Helene was NOT geoengineered by the government to seize and access lithium deposits in Chimney Rock.
    1. Nobody can control the weather.
    2. Charles Konrad, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Southeast Regional Climate Center, has confirmed that no one has the technology or ability to geoengineer a hurricane.
      1. Current geoengineering technology can serve as a large-scale intervention to mitigate the negative consequences of naturally occurring weather phenomena, but it cannot be used to create or manipulate hurricanes.
    3. Local officials have confirmed the government is NOT seizing Chimney Rock.
      1. There was no "special meeting" held in Chimney Rock between federal, state or local governments about seizing the town.
  2. Local officials are NOT abandoning search and rescue efforts to bulldoze over Chimney Rock.
    1. Chimney Rock is NOT being bulldozed over.
    2. Rutherford County emergency services personnel are going to extensive lengths to search for missing people, including in debris by using cadaver dogs to locate any remains of individuals trapped in the debris.
    3. Just as every other community in Western North Carolina, Chimney Rock officials are focused first and foremost on recovery efforts, followed by plans to rebuild in the future.
  3. FEMA is NOT stopping trucks or vehicles with donations, confiscating or seizing supplies, or otherwise turning away donations.
    1. FEMA does not conduct vehicle stops or handle road closures with armed guards - all road closures are managed by local law enforcement who are prioritizing getting resources to their fellow community members.
  4. FEMA has NOT diverted disaster response funding to the border or foreign aid.
    1. Disaster response efforts and individual assistance are funded through the Disaster Relief Fund, which is a dedicated fund for disaster efforts.
      1. FEMA's non-disaster related presence at the border has always been of major concern to me, even before Hurricane Helene, and I will continue to condemn their deployment of personnel to the southern border, but we must separate the two issues.
  5. FEMA is NOT going to run out of money.
    1. FEMA officials have repeatedly affirmed that the agency has enough money for immediate response and recovery needs over the next few months.
      1. Secretary Mayorkas' statement indicating otherwise was an irresponsible attempt to politicize a tragedy for personal gain.
    2. In the coming months, Western North Carolina is going to need more disaster relief funding than is currently available to assist with recovery efforts.
      1. I'm confident that supplemental disaster relief funding, which I am already involved in the process of creating, will be considered in the House once we return to session in mid-November.
  6. FEMA cannot seize your property or land.
    1. Applying for disaster assistance does not grant FEMA or the federal government authority or ownership of your property or land.
  7. The FAA is NOT restricting access to airspace for Helene rescue and recovery operations.
    1. Nobody seeking to fly resources into Western North Carolina will be prohibited from doing so by the FAA or North Carolina Emergency Management so long as they coordinate their efforts with NC Aviation.
      1. If you are looking to conduct an airdrop of resources but don't know who to contact for approval, please reach out to my office and we will share that information with you.
  8. FEMA is NOT only providing $750 to disaster survivors to support their recovery.
    1. The initial $750 provided to disaster survivors is an immediate type of assistance called Serious Needs Assistance that may be made to individuals in need as soon as they apply for FEMA assistance.
      1. The $750 is an upfront, flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula and medication while FEMA assesses the applicant's eligibility for additional funds.
      2. This award is just the first step of a longer process to provide financial assistance to disaster survivors in need of federal support.
    2. As an application moves through the review process, individuals are eligible to receive additional forms of assistance for other needs such as temporary housing, personal property and home repair costs, etc.
I encourage you to remember that everything you see on Facebook, X, or any other social media platform is not always fact. Please make sure you are fact checking what you read online with a reputable source.

With my warmest regards,

Chuck Edwards

Article:
Guard officials said Tuesday that the aircraft was a North Carolina National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter making a delivery of generators.

After the items were blown away, "The crew immediately identified the situation, aborted the landing for safety reasons, and departed the area."

This is a problem we had where I work a couple years ago. A police helicopter landed on site to assist with a pursuit that they cornered inside our fence line, and it sent trash *everywhere* as well as knocked over a smoking shelter with three people inside (only minor injuries and very dramatic requests for the union reps). And because nobody listens to us in the safety department when he took off again he just ruined the cleanup efforts.

Helicopter landings are pretty violent affairs but places where they're expected are usually secured against anything they can do. The police pilot had literally never landed except at clear pads. The national guard pilot here at least quickly realized he'd screwed up rather than continue to descend into in the chaos he just unleashed.

Western NC Congressman Chuck Edwards
Should also mention, western NC is pretty firmly Republican, and Congressman Edwards is a Republican who supports President Trump. He has apparently found the line he's unwilling to cross though, so good on him. My impression is that he is a decent man. My wife worked on a local project with him before he was elected to Congress, defeating the notorious Madison Cawthorn...

(Edited to specify which "President" was being referenced!)

It's good he made the statement, but I find it very disheartening that he had to. It reinforces my opinion that people focus too much time on the impact of social media on children, when it's adults who need as much protection.

Article:
Around 1 p.m. Saturday, an official with the U.S. Forest Service, which is supporting recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sent an urgent message to numerous federal agencies warning that "FEMA has advised all federal responders Rutherford County, NC, to stand down and evacuate the county immediately. The message stated that National Guard troops 'had come across x2 trucks of armed militia saying there were out hunting FEMA.'"

"The IMTs [incident management teams] have been notified and are coordinating the evacuation of all assigned personnel in that county," the email added.

Two federal officials confirmed the authenticity of the email, though it was unclear whether the quoted threat was seen as credible.

[...] By Sunday afternoon, personnel were back in place [...]

"It's terrible because a lot of these folks who need assistance are refusing it because they believe the stuff people are saying about FEMA and the government," Duncan said. "And it's sad because they are probably the ones who need the help the most."

It appears the threat in my last post was overstated.
Article:
The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office says a call came into the Rutherford County Communications Center on Saturday, saying a white male had an assault rifle and made a comment about harming FEMA employees working in the hard-hit Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area.

The sheriff's office said the suspect, 44-year-old William Parsons, made the threat at a gas station. Authorities say the comments were relayed to nearby soldiers, who called the sheriff's office to report the threat.

The sheriff's office said Parson's acted alone, contrary to initial reports, and was armed with a handgun and a rifle.

"The initial report stated there was a truck load of militia that was involved," a statement from the sheriff's office said. "However, after further investigation, it was determined Parsons acted alone and there were no truck loads of militia going to Lake Lure."

Though even a single potential shooter is bad enough.
