Cloaking by artificial cloud wall?

The beginning of this video (from about 0:25 to 1:45) shows an old footage of what seems to be a military experiment to hide a battleship by creating a cloud curtain by dropping some stuff from an airplane:

I find it impressive. Does anyone know more about this? Is this for real? When did this happen, who did it, and what material may have been used?
