proper balloon physics is a pain in the ass if you properly take into consideration the material engineering, doing a mod of this would look low effort even if any reasonable effort was put into it because of thisIt would be interesting if somebody who knew about game coding and such could come up with a patch (or whatever the correct word is) that would insert some balloons into one of those simulations... in their copious free time...
I wrote a quick and shitty 3d balloon simulator in opengl, it takes into consideration the balloon's density, elasticity and volume.. it does make me think of how to correctly do the shape of them, deflated without a knot and inflated with a knot.. I might take a look into creating a mod for msfs (microsoft flight simulator).. msfs uses directX 11 and 12 and provides an sdk... but here's the problem with msfs: it seems that in msfs, having two aircraft simultaneously isn't natively supported - which makes sense to have the balloon be a game object of aircraft type, right? so it seems it would require 2 mods to make this work, that way, the balloon can actually be influenced by the winds.. I do think this would be useful to simulate some scenarios, including how with most of the big game engines out there you can use all types of cameras
msfs is 129gb, downloading it to check out the difficulty level of creating these 2 mods
I've checked out a couple of modding msfs websites and there doesn't seem to be a balloon mod
the steps to get started modding msfs is to first download the sdk, launch msfs, and then go to Options > General > Developers and turn on Developer Mode.
Seems like next week a new version of msfs will launch, no word on if it'll have an sdk for mods, so if anyone will also try to create a balloon mod for msfs, I'd say stick with msfs2020 instead of 2024 as the community for msfs2020 seems to be some what matured already
I'll just stick to msfs instead of waiting to findout if msfs2024 will be "moddable" or not from launch day
Downloading msfs2020 is taking forever, I'll have to continue this another day
Considerations:
[I'm documenting everything here, since last time I coded something (CGI detection techniques, the last technique I coded received criticism for not going into depth of my approach)]
[this thread started on another topic as a reply but since it was getting too large I decided to create its own topic]
[seems like the copy and paste images went missing after I edited the original comment on another post, oh well.. I replaced what I could]
