Just heard. Two explosions in or near a hotel at the Boston Marathon finish line. Lots of injured. Three possible deaths. No cause given yet.

Anyone want to start a pool on when the first conspiracy theory is postulated and what it will be?

Explosion happened at 2:50, my father in law was at 40K (24.8 miles of 26.2 course) at 2:49, which means he should have been well clear of the blasts.

Explosion happened at 2:45 (according to Wikipediad, other sources say "before 3PM"), my father in law was at 40K (24.8 miles of 26.2 course) at 2:49, which means he should have been well clear of the blasts.

My friend was photographing not running. I texted him but haven't gotten a text back. Thank though.

The lack of anyone claiming responsibility so far is reminding me of the Atlanta Olympic Park bombings, in 1996:

It was a couple of years before they correctly identified Rudolph as a suspect, then three more before they caught him.

The problem is tons of people were using those trashcans, and he could have hidden that stuff in a tinfoil wrapping - possibly to look like a hot dog or some kind of food item you could get while spectating the marathon. Fast food bags are a favourite. But how it is delivered often depends on the explosives used, whether they have projectiles added and importantly what the bin is made of. A box or carton will provide protection of wires and against liquids spilling over it, after all it is a bin.

I not an expert in explosives, but I served in the army in Northern Ireland and a great deal of training was spent around bombs. Bins where a favourite way to place explosives. Virtually undetectable by eye due to the nature of rubbish, and you don't want to be rummaging around and set it off. Standard procedure was to just evacuate the area getting people to avoid any bins as they went and then get Felix in with the dogs. Another issue was evacuation routes. Bombs would often be set on timers, with the aim to give consequtive blasts, so one goes off and it gets people running and then the other goes off further away to catch them. I got caught out in a similar attack in the '80's where I was near a car bomb but a bomb had been placed in a bin further away went off as people ran away. Standard procedure in the day was to throw myself 20 foot in the air, scream and lie unconscious for a while. When I got up someone had to point out I had a 6 inch wide piece of metal sticking out the back of ny head. They had covered that subject in Basic Training so I was at a loss on what to do.

I feel sorry for the police in Boston, especially if they received intelligence during the event. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't inform the public. My experience was always acceptance by the public and either joviality or mild annoyance but never panic as such. Just for interest it is the main reason you don't find a bin on UK train stations, and if you do its just a clear bag on a wall.

Its not just the media. There is the marathon in London on Sunday and it has already been announced that security will be beefed up. Mind you security is already pretty tight. Apparently there is a funeral happening tomorrow and the area is swarming with the security services.
