Duration: 3 minutes
No of observers: 1

Location: Tempe, AZ, USA

Black rectangle with odd movements

In broad daylight above Tempe Arizona a black rectangle I spotted moving slowly westward and slightly up. After approximately 2 minutes it took a sharp 90 degree angle and slowly disappeared into a smaller shape to the north at a fast pace. Only captured the slow movement to the west on camera.

NUFORC Note:

Advertising sign? But aircraft not visible?

Here is a video of a similar sighting from the same area in Dec 2021:

Does anyone know if the objects in these links are all the same thing? Why do they look like flags but no planes are seen?

I think it is taken from around here, at a higher vantage point than this photo, looking over the river towards the Town Lake Marina, you can see light poles/masts from boats and the underpass of the bridge

Having a hard time lining it up though

I think this arrangement of flag, bike rack, float aif and bollards is the below pic but the blue bin and red circle are gone in the video

I completely agree with the ad-pulling plane solution, but I'd like to ask @JMartJr if it would be possible to tow a large kite from a car traveling one of the roads on South Mountain? I think it's possible for there to be consistent winds traveling upwards as they reach the mountain slopes.

Well, by the time I'm seeing this thread, the Tempe sighting seems pretty well resolved.
I did, however, watch the 2021 video and was a little saddened by it:

First, I'm thinking: "Well, that's pretty obviously a huge (but quite common) advertising banner..."
Then the guy filming says (~2:25 in) "...very, very, very, very interesting."
For my money, he could have left off ~4 of those "verys"...
and, uh, perhaps "interesting" as well.

So I played it on YouTube, hoping desperately that everyone would
immediately clarify what it actually was. Despite being up for 3 years, no one did.
On the more encouraging side, there were only a handful of comments...
so perhaps (hope, hope!) many others saw it and felt no need to comment.

p.s. When typing "YouTube" I missed one key hitting the key left of it...resulting in
me looking at "YouRube." :) Okay, that gave me my best smile of Sunday, so far.

I completely agree with the ad-pulling plane solution,
I do too, seen enough of them at the beach or over the football stadium...

but I'd like to ask @JMartJr if it would be possible to tow a large kite from a car traveling one of the roads on South Mountain? I think it's possible for there to be consistent winds traveling upwards as they reach the mountain slopes.
Possible? Yeah, I've towed large kites behind vehicles or boats, in the right conditions. Like out in the desert with nothing for miles, or down a runway at a closed-for-the-day airport during a balloon festival, or up a beach. You could potentially do it on a road, depending on how the direction of any wind interacts with which direction you want to drive. But there are issues that crop up... trees by the road, signage by the road, power lines along the road and the "Game Over" issue, power lines crossing the road or bridge over the road or tree limbs that hang over the road.

Another issue is that wind encountering mountains tends to become turbulent. You can decide to put up with that if you are just flying a kite with your kids or something, but towing a large kite behind a vehicle it is going to be risky.

So while possible in theory, in practice for many/most roads it is going to be very difficult verging on impossible.

I've been up South Mountain, and those are probably not things you would have encountered, but I get your point, those things could wipe out your kite immediately! Thanks.
