Bison Running for Their Lives!!

A youtube video. The site full of misinformation!! The video below which has already ranked up 300K views and has been mentioned on top news media outlets, states that bison are running for their lives due to the impending volcanic eruption of the Yellowstone Volcano, which is due any day now to destroy America!

At least that the jist of the claim. Do these bison really look like they are running scared for their lives? That does not look like running to me. They are just trotting up the highway!

Ha-ha!
There's 20 reasons this is nonsense…
the one that strikes me first is that the (undated? WTF?) clip is almost certainly shot
on the northernmost Yellowstone road that runs essentially east-west from the "North Entrance" to the "Northeast Entrance."
In short, whether trotting east or west, the Bison would not be "escaping" the caldera! :p

p.s. Here's a dash cam shot of them lounging about my campsite in January

And when three dozen 1,500 to 2,000 lb. animals with horns are advancing towards you, it gets your attention.

The park put out its own video response to this (which I caught via Doubtful News' Sharon Hill, who happens to be a geologist: Are animals fleeing Yellowstone because of coming catastrophe? No.).

This is pretty awesome and what a fast response. I wish more people would do this instead of glorifying the paranoid...

It was not spring, weeks before the Earthquakes...It just became spring.

Thanks.
Bison are peculiar animals:
On one hand they seem to understand that humans are no physical match for them…especially a herd of them.

But I've also seen forty of them sprint away, terrified, by the unexpected flapping of the wings of a common loon.

There is little nutrition under the winter snow, so they go to lower elevations…

swinging that big head to move snow to find un-nutritious plant life is exhausting

I can't seem to get a definitive location and direction...was it in the park or outside north of Gardner?

I worked at Mammoth hot springs for a summer and have spent a lot of winter time in the park as well over the last 20yrs...its really not uncommon for bison to use roads especially in the winter...and its really not uncommon for bison to be on the move for any number of reasons. It could have been pressure by wolves. Maybe the first Grizzly of the season poked its head at them? Sometimes herds (of any ungulate) just get up a head of steam on the move-The northern bison and elk herds in the park migrate north into Paradise Valley every year. they were not running for their lives in the immediate sense it was more of steady trot...This doesn't seem particularly odd to me...but my mom sent it to me concerned- so its making the viral rounds for sure

Nice pics @No Party - where were you camping? in the Lamar?

Thanks SR,
I was camping in Mammoth…snowshoeing and skiing into the Lamar. It's nothing short of amazing.
Yes, the bison really NEED to use the roads, to conserve precious calories, trying to survive 'til ~May.

I live not all that far from there and I saw a local-ish TV report from a [park] ranger who lives close to where that vid was taken. He said the buffs were actually running toward the interior of the park, not away from it and that they could be seen running like that on about any day you choose. I prolly saw the story on KECI out of Missoula.

Yes, Soulfly (in post 7) mentioned Snopes http://www.snopes.com/critters/gnus/yellowstone.asp
and that link alone destroys the whole false narrative for virtually any rational person

Are bison supposedly more attuned to this? Poor bears, they won't apparently wake up in time to get a clue and "run, run for your lives, run".

i dot know if all bears are the same, but seems they can wake up whenever.
besides I imagine they are awake by now.

The bears around here aren't awake yet but I'm at a higher lat than Yellowstone.

Besides, have they awoken and started bugging out of the park?

Well, if they're "Yogi" bears, then they're busy meditating, or in some odd position...like "Down Dog".

OTOH, Yogi Berra will say, "If you come to a fork in the road.........take it."

Yes, Yellowstone Public Affairs Chief Al Nash said, the March 30 earthquake was the biggest Yellowstone has seen in 34 years. However, Nash said some people living less than a mile away from the quake’s epicenter, which was located in the Norris Geyser Basin, didn’t even feel the earth shake.

The 4.8 quake was part of a series of smaller quakes that have hit the greater Yellowstone region over the past few weeks. Many believe those quakes are linked to a recent 5.1-magnitude quake (and aftershocks) that hit in the Los Angeles region earlier in March.

This news didn’t seem all that alarming to Nash, who said the park experiences 1,000 to 3,000 earthquakes every year.

“It’s just part of the geological situation we find here in Yellowstone,” he said.

Nash also addressed the reports that a large number of animals — particularly bison and elk — have been seen leaving the park in recent weeks. He didn’t deny the reports, either. He confirmed them.

“We did have a large group of bison, elk and other animals that moved outside the park recently,” Nash said. “They do it every year around this time in an effort to move to lower elevations where they can find food that’s easier to access. When things start to green back up, those same animals will walk right back into the park.”

Its probably the bison migration that keeps the super volcano from erupting......

Found this article and hope it helps. The writer discusses how its not uncommon for elk and bison to leave the park in search for food and then they make their way back in early spring.

Take a look at Tuner Radio Network, the video uploaders' website. http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/ Nothing but Fear mongering conspiracy theories.
I especially like the headline which states: Visually Confirmed: Enormous Craft Detected on the Moon!!!! Actually I cannot even find the Bison video on the site but they do think an Earthquake is going to hit Yellowstone any day. Based on previous articles about the topic..

The one thing I find odd about this, is that on the original video they didn't link to their website, or any website. As is found with most CTs. I wonder if the uploader knew how popular this would become, so he chose not to promote anything as to create the illusion that it is a real story from a real news network!

The real uploader had no idea that the CT crowd would latch onto this one. This is the ORIGINAL video upload.

I know, I've read the whole story. I think it's sick that people are allowed to do this. It's a shame because the guy seems really nice and he was just shooting some videos about Bison. It should be a cool video regardless of whether or not the doomsdayers pirate it and completely mislead the public. That's like taking NoParty's amazing photos and doing something similar.

...Then news agency after news agency started picking up on it, without looking at the original video ...

It would have gone viral with or without the cable news channels picking it up. We're lucky to have news channels that way Yellowstone was allowed to get the word out quickly that it was not true!

Just a point of clarification..... I did a quick Google search to see what media had covered the story and how. The Mainstream media that came up pretty much only covered the story to debunk it. On the other hand, the 'alternative media' (in this case the conspiracy profiteering websites) were the only ones that I saw misrepresenting the story.... though there had been a number of them that also exposed the story as bunk.

Just to reiterate that bison have historically left Yellowstone to migrate northward during winter, here is an article detailing the hazing of bison back towards the Park...lest they (supposedly) spread brucellosis to nearby cattle.

The hazing of the bison and the occasional culling of bison outside the park is a yearly political fight in SW MT that is rivaled only by wolves.

Think any of the doomsday profits will lose any credibility over this; it having been revealed that the bison migration is normal and when the massive explosion that they are predicting doesn't happen?

Noooo, it will be evidence that the expose' of this conspiracy by the ruling Elite caused the planned eruption to be canceled. Hero status for all involved!

Hazing rituals! U.S. Parks Service should be investigated for thus. What are they making these Bison do, binge drink and perform mock sex acts?
I too was confused and taken back by that choice of word, "Hazing". Strictly by definition it doesn't sound good, but I would imagine they aren't harassing or harming the animals, but if anyone knows what "hazing" methods they use to get them back into the park I would love to hear it.
