Yesterday these two videos got shared on Reddit across a few subreddits and a few local communities here in Kansas

I tracked down where it was recorded based on the video and some details he gave.

I put the location and time into Stellarium

His description matches Mars, he seemed to focus on it flashing, but that is typical of stars and planets especially when looking at it on a phone. Location all looks good where it is at in the sky for that time.

The amount of scintillation and brightness of the "UFO" makes me think that it isn't Mars. Looks more like the lights of an approaching aircraft to me.

Lets check......

  • Time and date =

    = 0533 UTC on 12 Nov
  • Witness location 37.7085273,-97.1822163 (north east part of Wichita)

Checking FlightRadar24 shows that this SouthWest 737 was flying directly towards the witness at that exact time.

Checking how that would have looked to the witness in Google Earth at 0533 UTC....

I think that is more likely to have been the culprit rather than Mars. What do you think @BreM ... ?

Interesting -- I was left wondering "If that is the plane, where is Mars? If that is Mars, where is the plane?" Then I noticed some hints of clouds in the video, especially visible to the right of the twinkling light Looking one last time before posting, I now think that is just stray light from the streetlights as they go out of frame, but still -- perhaps Mars is obscured by clouds and the plane is not?

Of course, if that is a "UFO," then the question "Where is Mars AND where is the plane?" arises!

I assumed something not moving mostly because they said they took two videos a bit apart and said he was out there for over 5 minutes without moving, so I assumed something not moving. Though it is possible the movement was not enough for them to notice if it was a plane so I might have made a bad assumption as ya that plane looks about right too. @flarkey

It also just looked like a planet through a camera having spent some amount of time taking pictures of them with my DSLR, though that is hardly scientific. I thought maybe the additional flashing was made worse by camera noise and the way they do denoising I might have to go film mars on my cellphone and see how bad it flashes. Though given how close they are to Wichita Mars might not be super visible especially with a phone camera and streetlights in frame. Wouldn't be that shocking if they overestimated the amount of time they spent watching it, and just not noticed the more subtle movement
