Sort-of related .... When you are flying over tropical oceans it's often possible to spot where islands are at over 160 km, by looking at the clouds. They tend to form over the islands in small cumulus types.

I don't - I've worked with many people who's worked in that part of the world and such an accident is overdue I'm afraid. :( It's more of a testament as to how good modern airliners are, how foolproof they are virtually all the time.

The PAPI was operational before the crash, which wiped the PAPI equipment out. They has visual glideslope guidance from it.

FWIW here's a photo of the LH engine, some distance from the fuselage. After watching the crash video I'm rather impressed the aeroplane stayed largely in one piece!
