Pre 1995 Persistent Contrail Archive

An Agena Target Docking Vehicle atop an Atlas rocket lifts off from Launch Complex 14 at Cape Kennedy at 10 a.m., March 16, 1966 just prior to the Gemini-8 liftoff at nearby Launch Complex 19. The Agena served as a rendezvous and docking vehicle for the Gemini-8 spacecraft. A chase plane leaves a contrail in the background. Photo credit: NASA

AS6-02-1485 (4 April 1968) --- View of the east coast of the United States as photographed from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's unmanned Apollo 6 (Spacecraft 020/Saturn 502) space mission. This photograph was taken during a pass over Georgia, between Savannah and Brunswick. Altitude of the spacecraft was 100 nautical miles. Numerous jet aircraft contrails can be seen over the Atlantic Ocean.

STS036-075-024 Sun Glint Patterns, Mediterranean Sea March, 1990
Spiral eddies can be seen off the northern coast of Egypt west of Cape Alam el Rum, in the Mediterranean Sea. As seen in the sun’s reflection off the water, the lighter-colored areas are more tranquil and therefore smooth. The darker blue-colored areas near the shore are rougher due to surface winds. A spiral eddy, refracted in the sunglint, is visible halfway between the tranquil and less tranquil waters (ear-shaped feature near center of the image). From upper left and traversing the image towards bottom center, two airplane contrails and their shadows are discernible.

The Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service was on TV the other night. I think this is an old contrail in the avalanche scene.

Mallaig station, Scotland. July 1980
Had to look up Mallaig as it sounded familiar. I may not have been there but definitely been on the ferry from Oban to Lochboisdale as I lived in Baile a' Mhanaich (to use it's proper spelling) when I was little.

I suspect I was too young to really look at contrails then. Not like when I was a little older and had "proof" the Earth was rotating cos I could lie on my back and watch the clouds moving overhead.

I was enjoying around the world in eighty days Micheal Palin 1989 episode 7 of 7 and there a few nice persistent trails over New York and London sorry could not extract pictures and the ytube the small frame version skip to 45.42 and,,, oh gotta stop my slow internet making this too hard

Opening credits from the 1960s French TV show Les chevaliers du ciel (known as The Aeronauts in the UK). A show about a crack French airforce squadron. produced 1967-70

Note contrails at 0:49, and aerodynamic trails at 1:11

There are a fair few episodes up on Youtube, I'll relive my boyhood over the next few weeks and see if I can spot any others

Started already...

7:16 (if you can take your eyes of Etendards taking off)
21:53 (Another Etendard launch with a Breguet Br.1050 Alizé parked behind)
a load of other 'possibles' as well, but can't say for sure if they are contrails or clouds (this is a 50 year old prog)

7:00 Drone smoke trails and missile contrail
again a fair few possibles through out.

(This a must watch for all aviation fans, pure French military aircraft porn!!)

A great series! Fond memories of the 1970s during school holidays! Unfortunately none of that footage is from the actual series. It is just a tribute/recreation using flight simulator footage with the original titles.

See part of original opening titles.

Ah right, I was 6 when this was on telly so memories are a bit blurred, still, loving the episodes on youtube, and will report contrails when I spot them.
