The Conspiracy is Changing?

I'm reading an interesting article i thought i'd share with everybody. The basic premise is, the conspiracy world is changing:

"… conspiracy theorists do not want, today in 2012, what they used to want ten, five or even three years ago. The endgame for them—the “finish line,” if you will—is no longer to convince significant numbers of people in the mainstream that Conspiracy Theory X or Y is factually true. Nowadays, conspiracy theories are being used as a vehicle to advance other ideas, usually a set of ideological or even religious principles. The factual veracity of conspiracy material is no longer as important as it once was. Consequently, debunkers of conspiracy theories—who are focused on what is factual, rational and supportable in objective terms—are going to find themselves increasingly outclassed in this new environment."

So, 911 is dead and three new cult movies sprung up. Chemtrails seem to part of all of them. I can see what he's talking about, and likely some of it is real, at least he has some examples. I did run across that Venus Project some time ago, and when I tried to login got an extensive questionaire which had some leading questions designed to see if you would 'fit' their model. I could see it pretty much was a cult of belief that would brook no opposition.

The thing we need to keep in mind is that some who we deal with on this issue are already members of x, y, or z and come with dedications we don't know about. If they are idealogically committed to one set of beliefs that is tied closely to chemtrails, we aren't going to sway them with facts if acceptance of those facts disturbs the prior held belief. I've seen that for a long time. To do so creates a mental dissonance such that to accept one means placing doubt in the fallibility or credibility of the other. It is a very hard one to overcome and would require lots of clear internal reflection by the believer.

I don't think I entirely agree with the premise. That type of reason-immune "true believer" has always existed. And we've always had people with highly different epistomologies in the religions, cults, and esoteric beliefs.

The slick bunk movies on YouTube are something of a game changer. But I do not think they are immune to fact-based debunking.

I think the chemtrail conspiracy was dying off, until the advent of youtube and increased availability of high speed internet for watching silly videos of contrails

I didn't even know what a chemtrail was until last summer when a family relative began blabbering about it while we were outside on the deck munching on burgers. I was stunned. I thought my family member was pulling my leg. I had NO CLUE people were out there looking at the sky and thinking this way. I still get stunned at some of the stuff i've read and seen on this forum. Where have i been all these years? LOL!
