Debunking Humor...

I'm currently watching the entire series of Time Team and this picture got me.
Try debunking this archeological site in 100 years.

A few months old now, but it looks like nobody else has posted it yet - John Oliver on Alex Jones. Pretty funny, yet at the same time a bit troubling knowing that Jones has a big following. John Oliver does a good job at showing, in a humorous way, how Alex Jones profits from the stories he spreads on his show.

That's the most enjoyable John Oliver I've seen. Say what you will about Alex Jones: he's manna from heaven for any comedian.

How tall is Imhotep?

Videos like these are forcing me to stick around this forum.
Can you spot the bunk in this next one ?

Look Around You is amazing. In fact, most of Peter Serafinowicz's stuff is, but not so well known.

Your question was a red herring: there is zero bunk in that second video.

Spent nearly 2 hours....

...watching videos that claim "don't try this at home",

.... by people trying it at home.

I was researching "chemwebs", and came across a couple of questions that I didn't know I needed answers to.

But now I definitely need these answered.........

(what the hell DO they do at work ? I wonder what the "new guy" initiation prank might be ?)

They don't make any. The spiders do it all. The Arachnologists don't have the web spinning glands in their bums like the spiders do.

but BOY, do they try!!!

And that answers your second question.

I have a good friend who is an actual arachnologist, employed by the Senckenberg Society. I have no idea how much he is making and I won't ask.

However I do know what he once did for several days at his job: he waited for two spiders to make love, then he poured liquid nitrogen on them at exactly the right moment (which is quite short). That enabled him to embed the pair in wax and cut them into thin sections, retrieving a tomography of the genitalia during copulation. This in turn answered some questions that had lingered for a while in the world of arachnology.
He also spent long hours watching and drawing those genitals, joking about 'spider porn'.

True story. I've seen the images. The private parts of these spiders are indeed quite complicated - rather like a security lock and a matching key ... Google for a paper on "Lengthening of embolus and copulatory duct" if you don't believe any of this.

lol - an American friend of mine studied arachnid behaviour at Masters level - was studying the same species of spider that was used in Arachnaphobia - apparently completely gentle beasts....

then he got a brain tumour and that screwed his promising career.....:/

I read that article. There was considerable disagreement as to whether it was actually "love."

Also JFDee, don't think we wouldn't notice your little joke...
