Photos of Clouds and Skies (That you took yourself)

Persistent contrail above the Golden Pavilion, Kyoto, May 2014.

It was a glorious day for contrails.

Is this a fall-streak/hole punch cloud on the left? I've never seen one before, and this looks much less defined than the photos I've seen, but the shape looks right? Or perhaps more of a distrail left by a plane, which has spread out? Snapped out of a train window at Clapham Junction this morning:

Lots of interesting clouds over London this morning. A big sheet of altocumulus (?) that seems to have been chopped about a bit by aircraft movements.

I'm inclined to agree with you, just the way it seemed to spread out into an oval was strange. The wait for a hole punch cloud continues.

In the second picture, is that altocumulus or cirrocumulus? I need to brush up on my cloud identification...

I'm inclined to go with cirrocumulus except towards the top of the picture where it's starting to look more like alto

My wife and I spent 4 days (Nov.27-30) in Kennedy Meadows, Eastern Tulare County, California. These are a few formations that we got to enjoy during that time.

I'm not really sure what to make of this one... it appears to be one trail that diverges into two different trails and a shadow but perhaps it's two different trails and the shadow of one of them? It was about 8:30 am on 12/10/2014 facing W or WSW.

This, I think. The long white trail is in line with the sun, casting an edge shadow, and there just happens to be an older contrail lined up with both of them - maybe lower as it's darker.

Dierdre, that is such a beautiful, well-composed photo! There are companies that will take your digital JPEG (or whatever) files, and print them on photo-quality paper for (usually) relatively modest fees....suitable then for framing.

My "ex" did this years ago....circa late 1990s. Of course, back then we didn't have the readily available photo-quality and affordable home ink-jet printers either...so, maybe this sort of service is a bit obsolete?

Low-level overcast clouds covering a wide area. Caused by a bit of high pressure and a moist air mass. Oh, and winter.

Very nice @Rico. What were you flying?

That reminds me, I was going through some holiday photos from last year and found these, taken from an early-morning BA flight leaving Lisbon last October. A nice variety of clouds and a few contrails in the distance for good measure!

Also, eta....looks like you were aboard an A-320? (Guessing by the winglets in one image)...

I wouldn't have been able to tell you - this holiday was before I got interested in the whole "chemtrails" thing, and my interest in/knowledge of aircraft was several orders of magnitude lower! :)

But looking at my booking it was flight BA499 which certainly uses an A320 currently, so I assume it was back then too.

Not really sure what was going on with this cloud- if its aircraft related or what...but it was interesting:

Ok...so, I didn't actually take this picture...my brother did...but it was so cool I had to share. This was taken yesterday (12.30) in SW Montana in late afternoon with the outside temp approximately -12 below (f)

Its a relatively common occurrence in this area in winter as the local ski area's catch phrase is "Sun Dogs and Powder Hounds"

DSC_0018.JPG Not contrails related but the moon looked pretty tonight behind the clouds. A nice pic of the night sky I think from where I can see it this evening.

Great sunset and sundog on New Years Day..
The sunset pic isn't the best resolution, and sort of looks like a nuclear explosion that I happened to get a picture of lol

A view of the Earth's shadow from a 787 looking east at 39,000 feet somewhere over the Texas panhandle on 12.29.2014 around 5pm (sorry it's a bit blurry, de-icer fluid from DEN!) From what I could see across the plane, the sunset was absolutely amazing as well, but couldn't get a picture of that:(.

I took this one a few days ago in London. "Mare's tails" I believe, but I've never seen any that look quite as much like a plume of feathers.

Cirrocumulus radiatus rather than cirrus uncinus I think
Thanks - I hadn't come across that cloud formation but that sounds spot on:

Cirrus arranged in parallel bands which, owing to the effect of perspective, appear to converge towards one point or towards two opposite points of the horizon. These bands are often partly composed of Cirrocumulus or Cirrostratus.
http://nephology.eu/cirrus/cirrus-radiatus

I just checked the date. It was Jan 2 at about 3.15pm, facing southwest. Looking at the satellite view from a bit earlier that day you can see the bands of cirrus ahead of the cloud which was moving up from the south. The cloud "rays" were aligned SW-NE so they would have been pointing almost directly at the camera, appearing to converge due to perspective.

Now these ones from this morning really are mare's tails! This is the cold front clearance behind storm "Rachel", which delivered plenty of rain and gales to the UK overnight. Looks like a distrail across the upper left, too.

image.jpg

In the clear sky behind was this odd cut-off piece of contrail, which was rapidly blown across the sky from the southern horizon while I watched.

I'm so bummed i got to watch this persistent trail evaporate in segments (between cloud areas) right before my eyes but couldnt pull over (and still see it) anywhere fast enough to catch the whole process. Tried to grab some while driving but not easy on windy roads : ( it was very cool to watch.
