Photos of Clouds and Skies (That you took yourself)

I'm camping on the south coast this weekend. Last night's sunset had what looked like cirrus uncinus to me, plus a few contrails.

I thought that was meant to be a portent of rain on the way, but it's beautiful beach weather today.

It's them chems that make the colors, right?

I actually just the other day used the old, old mariner's ditty about "red sky at night.." (etc) to explain to someone how even before the science of meteorology was developed, simple observations BY sailors (and the resulting lore) allowed them to become weather 'forecasters' of a sort....

More on this ancient mariner lore:

http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/weather-sailor.html

Red sky at night, sailors delight.
When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.
A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.

Thanks for the info, Weedwhacker. Very interesting. Westminster, CO looking off my deck. Scattered clouds, mostly sunny. A pretty typical Summer day here, really. Looking East. Denver International Airport is about 30 miles THAT way. (EDIT: Of COURSE they COULD be those 'Chem-bombs' I've heard about that look just like innocent clouds). On second thought, I disgust myself.

Jellyfish over Bakersfield.

I'll see your Jellyfish and raise you one Swirlyatus. I could only get two quick photos through a dirty plane window with my phone as we were descending into Brisbane on 6th September. It looked far more awesome in real life because it was turning and spreading. As the plane turned I lost sight of it and I don't know what scared the person next to me more - me randomly exclaiming "No, no, don't!" or my explanation of why I said it. :D

I have slightly adjusted the contrast.

Nice. Looks like it's spreading at about 45° to the direction of travel, but the "twist" is caused by the direction being like 60-45-60. Hard to figure out the full 3D though.

A part of the sky, I captured this today, includes AR 2192, 2:44 pm pdt, 244pm.jpg

A few days ago, I went to visit a couple of friends in eastern Tulare County, Kennedy Meadows, California. As my wife and I got out of the car 4 fighters in formation were pulling away from a refueling tanker, sorry, I couldn't grab my camera in time. I did catch the tanker,

The friends my wife and I were visiting, told us there was a show going on all day. The air space above Kennedy Meadows is mostly reserved for China Lake NAWS and Edwards AFB. The contrail lasted about as long as you see in my photo. We missed the dog fighting show, but we were treated to this show at the General Store, I'm fairly certain most of the cirrus was natural.DSCF0486.jpg

(Mick, how do I post a vertically cropped shot?)

You need to to rotate it with some other program. I fixed that one for you.

What were you uploading from.
Thanks for fixing it. I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager. It was saved in my files rotated and a little contrast added before I uploaded it. I went back to the original, opened rotated and saved through GIMP, it loaded fine. Must be a glitch with Office Picture Manager. I'll use GIMP from here on out.

The sky looking east this morning from Hampshire, about an hour ago (7.45am). Straight out of an apocalyptic Facebook post! Anyone who believes in "chemtrails" would have been having kittens...

A couple of visual aids to explain: First of all the trusty humidity map, showing pretty well saturated air up at 30,000 feet (red dot marks my location)...

And a reminder of UK flight paths. Again the red circle marks the spot - I'm in just about the busiest place I could be in the whole country!

And here's what a difference a day makes:

image.jpg

A cold front pushed through overnight (after what was, incidentally, the UK's warmest ever Halloween, with temperatures reaching 24C/75F in London!). You can see the front moving away on the horizon, but overhead is very dry air (this chart is for about one hour's time)

image.jpg

Still plenty of planes around, of course, but they're almost invisible with such short trails:

A friend just posted this on Facebook. He is near Santa Rosa. He's wondering why the shadow trail which turns into contrail. Does anyone have any ideas?

A small but vivid sun dog in an old contrail, on the first really frosty morning of the autumn (snapped one-handed while cycling!)

(Also Nibiru hiding in the trees ;) )

I think this a fragment of 22° halo rather than a sun dog, unless you tilted the camera with respect to the horizon.

I think the camera was tilted. As I said, I grabbed the shot one-handed while on my bike (I was running late and couldn't stop!)

Here is a photo a few minutes later, full-frame with some vertical reference points.

At 10.30 this morning the sky was crystal clear. By 12 noon some classic "mare's tails" had appeared:

And now, at 12.45, the sky is completely overcast with dark grey cloud.

Cool....I've been to Houston, Texas hundreds of times....maybe even "Tens" of thousands of times.

(Hint....i used to work for "Continental Airlines"....hence, I have BEEN to Houston....A LOT!!!!)

THAT being said? Pretty pics (and certainly you might copyright them, and sell on e-BaY)....but....is there a "point" here?
