Bunk you are willing to live with?

Add 25ml (0.87 fl oz) of English wine - taken from a historic vineyard near Glastonbury.
That's the bit that raises my eyebrows, the idea that stuff like garlic, leeks, onions, shallots etc are anti-bacterial I have no issues with, they have been used in folk medicine for years. The wine itself is not an issue either, alcohol is a preservative, has anti-bacterial properties was well as does tannin etc also found in wine...

...but why Glastonbury? What is special about wine from the UK's capitol of new age quackery? Wouldn't any wine do? Say like a bottle of cheap plonk from Tescos, or if you want something more organic, my mates home brew?

It was an attempt at making the original recipe as close to the original as possible - not to say that any other wine would not have had the same result, if wine even contributes to the efficacy at all. I first heard the story on Radiolab.

Ah right, Only I live not far from Glastonbury, nice place, full of new agers, hippies and all kinds of related people, and while its a very historic and very chilled out it is the centre of the WOOniverse, and first reaction was that the experiment was adding new-age druid type factor to the mix. :D

PS, if your ever in glasto, check out the micro-brew ciders in the Riflemans Arm. I can seriously recommend the Old Rosie. (Live music Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays as well)

Thanks for the recommendation. Closest to there I've gotten in the past few years is Winchester - visited quite a few old pubs :)

British wine is not exactly known for it's taste quality. be good if it had some use, but that does sound a bit wooey to me.
They are very friendly in the Rifleman's Arms, even to people who just want a look round and aren't buying anything.

I'm willing to try cannabis again, after 20+ years. After all, it's on sale 4 blocks away (CA).
I'm not expecting it to cure cancer....after all I'll be smoking it. o_O

Aware of the sometimes ridiculous hype about it's cures, one symptom it's claimed to help is muscle spasms.
I'll try it for that. There are some low THC, high CBD types.
I get up to 6 painful back spasm episodes a year.

....no, no.....never for the high

I know the answer in reality is :
More and better exercise.

I can live with most "conspiracy theories" as I dont think most are harmful really. They are silly usually.

The bunk that irks me the most is when the government lie about things as with government it often leads to mass violence and even genocide.

But dont get me wrong. I dont like when civilian people lie about things just for attention either. Especially when it offends people that have lost children. Some Sandy Hook theories would be a good example of that.

you realize that 99% of conspiracy theories REVOLVE around the Government lying right?

i think that's what he's saying, that he doesnt mind everyday bunk like "chalk cures cancer", he just minds the conspiracy related bunk. ??

**edit..wait i think i said that backwards**

but what's the 1%? even Paul is a clone was a gov lying thing.
On this view, the Beatles were planned by the shadow controllers of the sixties music industry. The purpose of the Beatles was social engineering. The phenomenon of the Beatles was not a spontaneous rebellion by youth against the old social system. It was a carefully crafted plot to introduce, by a conspiratorial body which could not be identified, a highly destructive and divisive element into a large worldwide population group targeted for change against its will.

New words and new phrases prepared by the Tavistock Institute mind-moulders were introduced to America along with the Beatles. Words such as “rock” in relation to music sounds, “teenager,” “cool,” “discovered” and “pop music” were a lexicon of disguised code words signifying the acceptance of illicit drugs. The subtext beneath this vocabulary arrived with and accompanied the Beatles wherever they went. It had only to be “discovered” by teenagers. The word “teenager” was never used until just before the Beatles arrived on the scene, courtesy of the Tavistock Institute for Human Relations.

It was important at that time for the Shadow Government (controlling the USA from Europe) to affirm illicit drug use in the youth culture.

A sort of religion related one. I don't know if there is a Rainbow Bridge, where our pets wait for us (In fact, I really doubt there is one) however, I find the idea of it comforting when I lose a pet.

They are harmful of course but not in the same way as a bomb landing at your child's wedding or a Doctors without Borders Hospital.

Rally caps. I obviously don't think they change anything other than the mood of the team but I flip my hat inside out every time a big game is close.

A rally cap is a baseball cap worn inside-out and backwards or in some other unconventional manner by players and/or fans to will a team to a come-from-behind victory late in a game.

I wouldnt exactly consider Aliens bunk though tbh.. From a purely evidenciary standpoint, yes.. its bunk because there's no solid data... When you look at the massive size of the universe, all the planets, suns, moons and other satellites, its impossible to think that there's NOT any.. Mathematically speaking, the law of averages agrees. Ive yet to encounter anything in nature that produces ONE of something.. there's almost always more than one. Im gonna use an argument from incredulity here, but to think that there's only ONE form of life in the universe seems a bit silly.

So from a purely objective perspective, yes its bunk.. now we also know what bunk Ill let slide, mainly because it doesnt hurt anyone else, or have an effect on anyone else aside from me.

Do you know if they ever declared that it was impossible for some of the pyramids to be built without advanced technology? i find it extremely difficult to believe that we are the only species in the world, when water has been found on other planets. We are in just 1 galaxy, with what? thousands of star systems in our lone galaxy itself? aren't there millions of other galaxies? scary thought actually.

Do you know if they ever declared that it was impossible for some of the pyramids to be built without advanced technology?.

Ancient Aliens made that claim ages ago because they got most of their bunk from Erik von Daniken. The pyramids were built using technology here on earth, by human beings without the aid of little green men. Drives me nuts when ppl still push that nonsense.

Yep, I agree with you there completely.

I always found this to be the best argument for potential life outside Earth.

I had to double check Neil's facts though and I came up with slightly different lists. Not so different that I think it makes a difference though.

Its been proved now days that it was fairly straight forward to put us the pyramids with fairly basic technology, Egyptian maths was fairly advanced, and once you know how moving large stone blocks about with sleds log rollers, simple windlasses etc isn't that hard, after all people with simple technology from the builders of Stonehenge to the people of Easter Island did it, and with the amount of monuments the Egyptians built, the temples and other stuff, not just the pyramids they had enough practice.

What I find most interesting is the fact that evidence now points to the fact that the pyramids were put up by willing volunteers, rather than slaves. It appears that as part religious obligation and part annual holiday (vacation), every year when the Nile flooded and your fields were being fertilized s you couldn't farm, you packed up the family for 6 weeks in Giza working on the Pyramids. You built the kings tombs, and in return you were fed, watered, accommodated and entertained.

been to a chiropractor about 10 years ago for a really bad back.
Been pain free ever since.

Id love to be able to be pain free with the various back issues/nerve issues I do have. Next time I go to my Dr, I will have to ask and get his opinion to see if a chiropractor would be something that would be beneficial to me and if it would help any. In regards to what are my issues, sometimes I do wonder if it could help or even work and then at times, I am like, this is something I will just have to live with for the rest of my life. If you do not mind me asking, what were your back issues that you had and were helped by the chiropractor? Im wondering if they are the same as mine or even if mine could be helped with a chiropractor

Thirty years ago my grandmother convinced me to try ginger for sea sickness and it has always worked better for me than the over the counter medicines, now though seems to be some science on the it but meh it was homeopathic back then.
Also the little man who would hide my keys while I slept. I firmly believe he is real and a jerk. Whole reason I got a cat was to deal with him, and now the cat sometimes hides my keys.....

If you were actually taking real ginger (or something containing real ginger) then it wasn't homeopathic.

There's often confusion between "herbal" and "homeopathic" medicines. Herbal medicines contain real plants or plant extracts, many of which have biologically active ingredients - many drugs originally come from plants. Homeopathic medicines, by contrast, contain basically nothing. They are, to as close as can be detected, pure water or sugar pills.

Yep real Ginger and the fresher the better, for me at least. I see in my mind I have mixed Homeopathic, Herbal, and old wives tales together into a catch all category. Well guess that example is disqualified, but nothing you say can disprove the little man who hides me keys while I sleep, or would if my cat had not hid them first.

Include me in the group of the (formerly) confused! I was doubtful of your explanation (the skeptic in me) and had to look it up!

Get a Dog to keep the cat in line, but teach him to FETCH KEYS before you let him loose in the house or HE will start to steal them.

The Common House Pixie, Piscus Theivingitteri. I've got a nest as well, and they can be pain in the arse, but there is not much you can do. Cats are no good, they LIKE cats and buy them off with their own magic cat-nip, and the cat ends up working for them. Best let them get on with it and don't annoy them, you can try to bribe them leaving odd gifts on shelves for them, safety pins are a good offering. Anyway if you keep them happy they will help you out from time to time buy leaving a few coins down the back of the couch at times when you really need small change etc.

I know all the problems in this country are caused by Invisible Pixies, and that an umbrella with a Union Flag on will protect completely from Nuclear blast, our Prime Minister told us (although he did look a lot like Peter Cook at the time:)

So one study says pollution accumulates throughout the week, peaking on the weekend and causing more rain on Saturday and Sunday, while another study says pollution peaks mid-week and causes more storms on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Lies, damned lies and statistics?
That a good point. Sometimes I see a study that settles the matter, but later turns out to be wrong.

And a recent study seems to be in contradiction, stating that pollution peaks mid-week which produces more tornadoes and hail compared to the weekend.

They discovered that tornadoes and hailstorms occurred at a rate of about 20 percent above average during the middle of the week. In contrast, the phenomena occurred at a rate of roughly 20 percent below average on the weekend.
[..]
The team then investigated Environmental Protection Agency air-quality monitoring data and noted that human-made, summertime air pollution over the eastern U.S. peaks midweek. The cycle is linked to more human-made pollution created during the five-day workweek, such as commuters driving to and from work.

The BBC article linked to above, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/146120.stm , refers to "the region just off the heavily populated east coast of the US", yours "over the eastern U.S.". These are non-overlapping regions - the coast being the line that separates them.

That a good point. Sometimes I see a study that settles the matter, but later turns out to be wrong.
The first step in debunking any claim is asking "Is it true", and the second is reading the fine print. If someone makes a claim based on a single year's statistics, check the other years. In general a number of sources are better than relying on just one.
